Chief’s Action Items Summary
“Blowin’
Smoke”
On Saturday, September 15th, we will meet at the Green YMCA
from 10am - 2pm for a very important event ... our fall recruitment day. We can all say that we have personally benefited
from our time with our sons, and fellow dads and sons in the Manikiki Nation ...
campouts, canoeing, overnights, FAScar, and too many other fun events to count.
By helping out at our recruitment event, we can pass the
torch to new members and build up our ranks. This event will ensure that
our Nation continues strong for many years to come, and that all of our tribes
have new members to carry
their name forward into the future.
We will have free food, drinks, games and displays about our
Nation. There are hundreds of people who come into the Green Y every
Saturday, and we can talk to them one to one about what the Guides program is
all about. In addition, our Nation has committed to advertising in the Suburbanite and Green Leader over the first two weeks of the month to promote this
event in particular, and our Nation in general.
This is a big job, and should benefit everyone, but we need
participation from every tribe. We need help setting up the big teepee in
front of the Y, and setting up and tearing down on Saturday morning and afternoon.
There will be more information forthcoming in your e-mail, but again, I urge
your support to make this event a success for our nation!

Upcoming Nation Events:
Recruiting
Drive
Green YMCA
Saturday, September 15th,
10:00am – 2:00pm
We are counting on the members of the Manikiki Nation to
represent us at this very important recruiting drive. Come with you sons, in
dress uniform, to help introduce our organization to a lot of folks visiting
the YMCA. Even if you can only make of
for an hour, your participation is appreciated, especially the smaller tribes
who need new blood.
Marvin
Capps Alumni Golf Outing
Chenoweth Golf Course
Saturday afternoon
September 22nd starts at 11:30
Manikiki Nation alumni, Jack
Williams, Dave Weimer, and Jeff Plumb are once again sponsoring this long
standing traditional event. For $60 you get 19 holes with a cart, lunch, a
steak dinner, adult refreshments and prizes. This is a scramble format so put
together a foursome, fill out the entry form located at the end of this smoke,
and prepare for a good time. Don’t wait
too long because there are only 40 spots available for golfers and it always
fills up.
Non-golfers join your Guides buddies, past and
present, at the 2007 Marvin Capps Alumni Golf Outing on Saturday September 22nd
at Chenoweth G.C. Only $20 to share in
the fun and food. Just fill in the
entry form and note that you just want to hang out.
Fall
Campout
Camp Fitch
Friday evening -
Sunday morning, September 28th-30th
The Mohawk Tribe, with the help of
the co-sponsoring Crow Tribe, has decided to take us back to Camp Fitch located
right on Lake Erie in Northwest PA. It
has been a few years since we last visited Camp Fitch, and the veteran Nation members
are excited to return. Camp Fitch is
one of the nicest YMCA camps within driving distance. It has some similarities to Camp Y-Noah with horse back riding,
stations with a climbing wall, bow and arrows, BB guns, real .22 rifles, and an
indoor sports center for games and soccer.
The Camp has nice cabins with indoor plumbing and it is right on Lake
Erie which will make for an awesome fire ceremony. Cost is $140 for father and sons.
NOTE: There is a $1500 fine for
bringing wood across county lines. This
is a result of the emerald ash borer insect that is rapidly spreading throughout
the forests of the Midwest and killing of thousands of ash trees. We are researching a plan for providing wood
on a per cabin basis which will be finalized at the September longhouse.
Nation Officer Reports
Nation
Chief: Scott “Singin’ Moose” Summers 330-644-9110,
330-606-6965 scotts@rolandus.com
Summer has come to a close and the kids are back in school which
means the fall campout is only weeks away.
We are returning to Camp Fitch which is where my son and I started our
time together in Indian Guides. He was
a five year old and he spent the weekend clinging to my leg. Now he is 11 and we are looking forward to
our 11th fire ceremony together.
Soon he will be a young man hangin’ out with friends and chasing girls,
so I intend to make the most of the remaining time we have in Guides to be a
positive influence on his future.
Someday in the long distant future we will get together and reminisce
about the good times we shared at Indian Guides campouts.
For boys in Intermediate and Middle school (approx. 5th
grade and higher), we have some special plans at this campout. Camp Fitch offers paintball so we will be
looking forward to participating in that.
We will also have some special plans for Saturday night that you won’t
want to miss. There will be a special Trailblazer
email sent out after longhouse with more details. There will also be an official Trailblazer event later this
fall. We will finalize the plans for
the event around the campfire on the shore of Lake Erie. Don’t miss out on the fun!
We had our budget meeting in July, and at the August Longhouse we
voted to approve the budget and event plans for 2007-08. We have another great year planned and there
is a new calendar at the end of this Smoke
for you to look over and work into your schedules. We also have a new group of Chiefs and Council that we will introduce
at the fire ceremony. It promises to be
a great year. See you at Camp Fitch

Just wanted to alert you
to look at page 4 of this week's Suburbanite....our ad promoting recruiting and
our event at the YMCA on September 15th is there. We have a similar
ad placed to run in this week's Green Leader, and will repeat both ads in next
week's issue. This is part of our recruitment efforts, as approved by council
in last month's meeting. We are making this investment to help get some
fresh blood in our nation and our tribes; however, for this event to succeed,
we need people from every tribe to participate in the event on the 15th. Jeff Pearce from the Comanche tribe will be
calling all tribe chiefs to get volunteers. We need to have everyone
on board with this....If chiefs can't attend, please see to it that you are
able to send someone from your tribe.
Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. Tonka Hey!
Medicine Man: John “Sits
By Fire” Waller 330-867-5726,
330-256-4430 john.waller@wilsontool.com
Since my last report, we have a new tribe leading the way in Big
Medicine Points, and that is the Cherokee. This does not include attendance numbers from
the Family Picnic or the Great Trails Festival yet. Those events will be tallied before the fall Campout, so hang on
to your hats. It’s a tight race with
the Navajo, Apache, Arapaho and Mohawk making noise also.
Chiefs, if your tribe has not been mentioned in this report make
sure you get as many of your big and little braves to attend the final events
of the year so they can have a shot at the Big Medicine Award. Good Luck to all Manikiki Nation tribes as we
round out the year!
Wampum
Bearer: Dwayne “Big Bad Wolf” Haines 330-699-0972,
330-419-1002 dghaines@babcock.com
There are a lot of things
going on right now within Indian Guides. The Council and many chiefs are
working hard on recruitment and the Campout. As summer winds down
and the kids are back in school we look can forward to the fall Campout. This
is a great recruiting tool, so you guys with 5, 6, and 7 year olds, look to
recruit a new member. If not for your
tribe, then for a tribe in need.
Tally
Keeper: Rich “Howling Wolf” Ashley 330-882-2532,
330-807-9104 rich@awrsofakron.com
This is my last Smoke as
Tallykeeper, and with it Richie and I close out six years in Guides. I hope you’ll pardon me for bragging for a
minute, but when Richie arrives at Camp Fitch for the fall Campout, he will
have completed six years of perfect attendance. It’s been a challenge juggling football, soccer, baseball,
basketball, etc., but it’s a goal he’s worked at and sacrificed to achieve. We hope to participate in Trailblazers, but
I know that he’s increasingly going to want to be on his own.
In a world that moves very fast and pulls us in many
directions, Guides has been an important part of our lives. It has helped turn “we ought to do that
sometime” into “we’re going to … this weekend“. Guides has helped make sure that I put aside at least one weekend
a month for Richie and me … something I should have, but might not have done
otherwise.
I’ve also enjoyed the friends I’ve made with fellow big
braves. I thank you for the friendship
and for the opportunity to serve as chief of the Arapaho and as
Tallykeeper.

Tonka Hey Mighty Apache!
Our fall campout out Camp
Fitch is fast approaching. Personally
we can't wait! With that in mind, I
need a head count and $ as soon as possible. The cost is $140 per family with the Nation picking up the cost
for extra sons. By all accounts,
everyone really likes Fitch. Check it
out at http://www.campfitch.com/ .
The most important event,
to keep the Nation strong, is our recruitment event Sept. 15th. We will be at the Green YMCA starting at
about 9:00 that morning until mid-afternoon. Setup will probably be Friday night, but I will forward details to
the tribe as soon as they are available. There will be hot dogs, prizes and activities so bring your
feathers, vests, trophies, FAScars ... anything
to do with Indian Guides, and we can make this a great event. Not to mention there may be some extra
Medicine points for this event as well. We should also have the new Tipi cover complete and this will be
the first event to show it off. Hope to see you there!
Arapaho: Paul “Big Foot” Scheatzle 330-832-0304,
330-323-7683 paulscheatzle@hotmail.com
I hope everyone's summer
is going well.
We need assistance for
the recruitment event at the Green YMCA on Saturday, September 15th from
10 am until 2 pm. Bring your young
braves and wear your feathers. Please give an hour if you can.
Remember, the golf outing
is Saturday, September 22nd, starting at 12:00. If you need a form, they
are available on the website at www.yindianguides.org. Visit the website often for reminders,
calendars, Guides information, etc.
Let me know if you plan
to go to the campout at Camp Fitch 9/28-9/30. It's a fantastic
place. I'll make the beans. It is
$140 for father and all of his sons. Scholarships are available for
financial hardship.
Please deposit some money
in the tribe checking account. I'll forward your balances soon but
everyone is under $100.
Blackhawk:
Jeff “Jumping Fish”

Tonka Hey Blackhawks!
Hope everyone is having a great summer. Thanks go
out to Todd Mellon who offered to be our new chief. Please give me a head count, if you will attend the campout
Cherokee:
Frank “Chasing Tail” Williams 330-794-2707, 330-715-3953
FWilliams@ci.akron.oh.us
Mighty Cherokee,
I hope everyone is doing well and has enjoyed their
summer. The last couple
events for the year are coming up quick and I will need a head count soon. I
hope to see everyone at the fall campout.
Comanche: Jeff “Last Hawk” Pearce 330-644-4749,
330-714-7892 jeffp@pearceengineering.com
Tonka Hey!
I hope most of the Nation
made it to The Great Trails event. We had fun there, bought some nice
items and ate way too much. The kettle
corn and the buffalo jerky were my favorites; my kids loved the root beer!!
The fall campout is just
around the corner; my son has been talking about it since we left Y Noah last
spring! Hope to see you all there!!
Manikiki Nation
recruiting event at the YMCA! I want to ask everyone who reads this to
please show up to help out. Bring your little braves and your vests and
feathers and cars and trophies, and let's show people what this is all
about. Those of us in smaller tribes really need your help to keep all
the tribes strong therefore helping to build a strong Manikiki Nation! We
greatly appreciate any help you can provide!!
Creek: Kevin “Running Pike” Adkins
330-645-6542 kevina@amerimail.com
Those of us that went to
the Great Trail Festival had a nice time. If you went, I hope you got to see the cannons being fired. It was pretty cool.
The Creek Tribe is
looking forward to the fall Campout and is excited about going back to Fitch.
Happy Creek Tribe birthday
wishes go out to Bob “Wild Wolverine” Simmons, Jeremy “Running Pike” Adkins,
Scott “Rolling Rock” Arbuthnot, Ryan Foust, and Jeff “Moon Star” Plum.
Crow: Dan “Big Rock” Hickman
330-896-7164, 330-472-7010 nhickman3@aol.com
Tonka Hey, Mighty Mighty
Crow.
It has been a very busy
summer for all of the Crow Tribe and our participation at events has been very
lack luster. However fall is here and Camp
Fitch is around the corner, so hopefully we will be able to get back on track
with our event participation.
On Sept. 15th
there is an Indian Guides recruitment effort at the Green Y which we need to
help support. Council is working on the
particulars and there should be an email coming soon about this event.
If you don’t know by now,
Jim Livers has stepped forward to be the new chief of the Crow tribe next year
and I have agreed to join Council as the Storyteller. We will make the transition at Camp Fitch.
Kickapoo: Paul “Running Deer” Mallue 330-497-9943, 330-209-4366
malluep@firstenergycorp.com
We have all had busy
summers, limiting our participation in Nation events. Hopefully, we can get back in the swing of things this month.
The Nation will be
holding a fall recruitment day at the Green YMCA on Saturday, September 15th
from 10 am to 2 pm. Please help out at
this event with your sons if you can.
The golf outing is
Saturday, September 22nd, starting at 12:00. Go to www.yindianguides.org
for more information.
The fall campout will be
held at Camp Fitch, September 28th – 30th. This is
a beautiful site on Lake Erie in northwest PA. It is $140 for each father/son with the Nation paying for
additional sons. Hope you can all
attend.
Happy birthday to Colin
Johnson who turned 10 on August 9th, Nate Mallue who turns 10 on September 4th,
and Ryan Shahan who will be 13 on the September 25th. Hard to believe how big our boys are
getting.
Mandan: Jeff “White Eagle” Rand 330-899-0735,
330-813-1122 jrand@hbchemical.com
Tonka Hey,
Great news for the Mandan
tribe. Bill Spaid has agreed to lead the tribe in 2008. I strongly
believe this will help strengthen our tribe for years to come. This also
means that we will not be merging with another tribe. Bill will need all
the support we can offer and the first mission at hand is recruiting some new
braves. If you see a new neighbor or know of a young family at work,
invite them to a campout so they can see the benefit of being in Indian Guides.
Hope all are having a
great summer and I look forward to seeing you all at the campout later this
month. Check the Smoke for
details.
Mingo:
Scott “Sitting Bull” Kanis 330-753-8650,

Mohawk: Brian "Fighting
Cardinal” Morris
330-896-1394, 330-933-2372 bdmorris@aol.com
We need to get a head
count for the fall camp-out September 28th – 30th, and a
count of tribe members that are going to the golf outing September 22nd.
Money for the camp-out is due by the
next Longhouse September 18th if you plan on going.
Happy Birthday (July) Drew
Rickman (Flies Like an Eagle), Dan (Running Eagle) (Sept.), and Brandon Morris (Golden
Eagle).
Navajo: Mike “Eagle Eye” Vinciguerra 330-699-0207, 440-669-3264 MiVinciguer@aol.com
Reminder: the campout is
September 28th – 30th at Camp Fitch. Please get me your $140 ASAP.
Thanks!
