Haunted Hay Ride – Friday October 24th at Boettler Park
Come join us for some scary fun at the Y Noah
Haunted Hay Ride being held at Boettler Park this year. There will be an early ride for the younger
kids (and Dan Hickman) so they won’t be as scared! Early Family Hayride is from 6-8pm.
Then there will be the Haunted Hayride for us
brave men and boys who dare ride through the dark!! The bloodier, scarier hayride goes from 8-10pm (you must be in
line by 10pm to ride the haunted hayride).
Pre-sale tickets are $6 for adults; cost at the
door is $10. Kids are $1. See the flyer
at the end of this Smoke Signal for more details.
Refreshments are being provided by the Nation!
This is a family event so please get your
head count to your Chief ASAP!!!
Also
note that they are still in need of volunteers to help set up the scares and
get ready for the hayrides. Contact Jim
Cross for more information on assisting with the setup!

Nation
Chief: Kurt “Big Bear” Leibensperger 330-699-4734,
330-606-1944 kurtleib@hotmail.com
I am
writing this the Sunday evening of our campout at Fitch. Though I am
tired, I am reminded of why so many of us in our nation love going to Camp
Fitch. A really cool setting, along with plenty of activities, means
a fun weekend was had by all. Thanks especially to Jim "Always
there with plenty of wings" Livers and the Crow for a spectacular weekend,
and to Sam Ewing and the Cherokee for putting on some fun nation games.
Of course,
I would like to thank everyone who served as chief, or on nation council this
past year. Our success as a nation is really a group effort, and all
of you contributed in many ways to making this past year happen. Our
nation now stands strong at 250 men and boys on our roster and although the
Mingo tribe is retiring from our nation, we look to have a new 12th tribe
coming aboard very soon!
Rather
than looking back, I'd like to take my final Smoke article as Nation Chief to
look ahead...
Andrew is
only 10 this year, so although I will be stepping down as Nation Chief, you
will still see us at nation events for at least a few more
years. Hope to see all of you there. To those of you with
older boys who are leaving our Nation, thanks for all your time with us, and
hope to see you around at Post Longhouse meetings at Legends, or our Nation
Reverse Raffle in 2009!
War Chief: John “Sits By Fire” Waller 330-867-5726,
330-256-4430 john.waller@wilsontool.com
First, a
big thanks to Jim Livers and the Crow tribe for pulling off a very successful
Fall Campout at Camp Fitch this weekend. The food was great. All of
the Apache fathers and sons had a lot of fun and I know we are not alone. Way to go, Guys!
Secondly,
I want to thank each of our Tribal Chiefs and Council for their efforts in
making our recent recruitment drive a good one. Passing out flyers promoting the Guides to the youngsters at the
elementary schools proved to be effective. A “thanks” to Tom Knoebel for reintroducing this idea to
Council. Please don’t stop talking to
your friends and neighbors about joining the Indian Guides. We always need new members, not just in
September!
Lastly,
Sammy “Firechain Hawk”, Jacob “Roaring Lion” and I are excited to serve as your
Nation Chief for this year. We have a
fun lineup of events, some classics and others new, for us to enjoy. We hope to see all of you at these events. If you don’t know me, come up and say hello
and I will do the same!
Sachem: Scott “Singin’ Moose” Summers 330-644-9110,
330-606-6965 scotts@rolandus.com
My rein as a leader in the Great
Manikiki Nation has ended, sort of.
Looking forward to working with the Trail Blazers group.
It’s been an honor to serve this
Nation and I urge everyone to do the same!
Medicine
Man: Jim “Iron back” Cross 330-245-1326, 330-697-9121 jcross009@neo.rr.com
I will be
contacting all last years Chiefs soon to finalize attendance. It will be soon so I can have beads for the
next longhouse. I now have headbands
again…I would like to get a count of all new members that haven’t received
headbands this year.

Ancient
Indian knowledge!
The Lone
Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set
up, both men fell sound asleep. Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger
and says, 'Kemosabe, look towards sky; what you see?'
The Lone
Ranger replies, 'I see millions of stars.'
'What that
tell you?' asked Tonto.
The Lone
Ranger ponders for a minute then says,
'Astronomically
speaking, it tells me there are millions of Galaxies. Time wise, it appears to
be approximately a quarter past Three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord
is all powerful, and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems
we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Tonto?'
'You
dumber than buffalo poop. Someone stole tent.'
Wampum
Bearer: Dwayne “Big Bad Wolf” Haines 330-699-0972,
330-419-1002 dghaines@babcock.com
Good Luck
to Jim Livers as your new Wampum Bearer. It is actually a pretty straight
forward job with the great council and chiefs that we have.
Everyone keep up the great work and dedication to the Nation.
Tally
Keeper: Jeff “Last Hawk” Pearce 330-645-6075, 330-714-7892 jeffp@pearceengineering.com
Campout
was great as usual!! Thanks to the Crow
and the Cherokee for the added food and fun!!
The
Comanche Tribe has really grown and it was great to have some new dad’s sharing
their time with our nation and their sons.
Hard to believe
another year has passed. My time as
Tally Keeper was great and I look forward to serving as the Nation War Chief!
I urge
everyone in this Nation to take part in the leadership as a tribal chief or a
council position. It gives you the
opportunity to expand your friendships beyond your fellow tribesmen. It has also given my son the opportunity to
make new friends from other tribes.
Web
Spinner: Charles "Kicking Buffalo" Campbell 330-854-3077,
330-264-5383x237 kickingbuffalo@sbcglobal.net
Matt and I
and the rest of the Apache had a great time at campout. We wanted to offer a great big thanks to the
Crow and especially Jim "Wing Man" Livers! The food trough Friday night was a big hit all-around. If any of you don't know Jim, he's easily
recognized by the fryer that always seems to be in front of him at the
campouts!
I hate to
say it but the seasons seem to pass more quickly each year. But just that fact makes Indian Guides all
the more important. It makes us slow
down and take a little time to spend with our boys. Just that makes Indian
Guides worth it.
See you at
the Haunted Trail!

Thank you
again for the opportunity to be your Chief, it was a great experience and I really
enjoyed working with the other Chiefs. See you all at the hayride.
Congratulations to Larry and Kyle Murgatroyd as they lead us into all
kinds of crazy fun in 2009. Thanks Kyle
and Larry.
Happy
Birthday to Parker Locke (6 years old) on 9-23 and to Matthew Campbell (13
years old) on October 5th!!!
Arapaho:
Paul “Big Foot” Scheatzle 330-832-0304, 330-323-7683 paulscheatzle@hotmail.com
The mighty
Arapaho tribe welcomes 4 new dads: Dan Payne, Len Borelli, Justin Bajkar
and Bill Breslin and their sons.
Fall
campout was a great time on the shores of Lake Erie. For our new members,
they had a weekend that may be hard to top. We're looking forward to the
haunted hayride in Green.
The
program is set for the zoo-mobile to come again to the father son banquet this
year at Camp Y-Noah Dec 14th.
I'm
looking forward to being your chief for one more year.
Blackhawk:
Todd “Sly Fox”
Mellon 330-645-9456 330-819-7762 tmellon@primebusinesssolutions.net
I just
wanted to thank everyone for a wonderful year for allowing me to be chief. I am looking forward to Dave Beitko taking
and leading us on to another successful year. I am confident that he will do an excellent job. Thanks again for everything and we will see
all of you at the Hayride.
Cherokee:
Sam “Buffalo Hump” Ewing 330-245-1138, 513-907-9860
samewing@sbcglobal.net
What a
great time we had at Camp Fitch for our fall campout. The weather was spectacular, the food was
fantastic (thanks to the Crow tribe) and many memories were made. I want to thank my Cherokee brothers for
helping with the Nation games. All the
feedback I received was positive, especially for the sleeping bag relay race.
I have
passed the Chief’s headdress to Rick “Running Horse” Crowl for the next twelve
moons as I move up to Nation Council as the new Storyteller. Please continue to support the mighty
Cherokee tribe as Rick takes the reins. I look forward to another fun year of activities to share with my
son and my Cherokee brothers.
Comanche:
Tom “Fighting Eagle”
Knoebel 330-882-2387 TKnoebel@tribute.com
The
big-medicine-leadin’ Comanche had a blast at the fall campout where we welcomed
3 new families to the tribe; the McKenny’s, DiRocco’s, and Schlue’s. It
is wonderful to have the tribe back to full-strength, not to mention having so
many future chief’s in waiting! The boys had a blast fishing, throwing
rocks in the water, playing in the dirt, rock-climbing, shooting bb’s, playing
in the dirt, bow and arrow shooting, riding ponies, playing in the dirt,
running up and down the hills, shooting 22’s, and playing in the dirt!
On a sad
note, the Comanche wish to extend our condolences to Kim Ausel on the loss of
her father last week. To her, Rick, and Spencer, our thoughts and prayers
are with you in this difficult time.
We are
looking forward to a tribe family outing in October as everyone comes over to
the chief’s house to rake leaves, er; I mean, have a bonfire! The hotdogs
and brats will sizzle and a new Comanche cornhole champion awaits to be
crowned, so let’s look for a Saturday evening in October to get together!
Happy
birthday to Todd “Scardy Cat” McKenney who celebrates, I believe, the 6th
anniversary of his 39th birthday on Oct 11th.
We’ll see
everyone at the haunted hayride!
Creek:
Dave “Brave Buckeye” Rownd 330-494-5544,
330-352-4747 drownd@starkmetal.com
What a
GREAT campout! Camp Fitch was clean and bug free and the weather was
great! It was especially nice to have so many different tribes at one
campfire. I personally experienced my first taste of “Moose Juice”.
Something I will never forget! What a fun time! My accolades to the
Crow Tribe for a feast to be remembered and to the Cherokee for some fun Nation
Games…of which the Creek Tribe won both!!
Happy
birthday this month to Scot Kingan and New Creek Chief Brad Borne
I turn my
feathers over to Chief Borne now. What a great time I had with my son as
Chief. I have to thank wise old Jeff “Moon Star” Plum for getting me into
Indian Guides 5 years ago. It has truly been one of the best experiences
I have had with my son. After the scare at the Crow Tribe’s campsite
Saturday night my son looked at me and said, “I can’t wait to be able to do this
with my son some day!” That says it all.
Crow:
Jim “Buffalo Wing”
Livers 330-334-8137, 330-807-6781 jlivers@neo.rr.com
I’d like
to thank all the Crows for making the fall camp out a success. Everyone helped and did their share. Also thanks to Sam Ewing and the Mighty
Cherokee for their help in the Nation Games.
This is my
last Smoke as Crow chief. Thanks for
all your help and special thanks to Dano, ex-chief Dan Hickman, and ex-chief
Bob Walsh. Good luck to new chief Jack
“Old No. 7” Daniels.
Happy October
birthdays to Devin ”Flying Hawk” Green 10-06 and Austin “Sparrow” Hawk 10-31.

Just
wanted to say thanx for everyone that was in charge of Camp Fitch and Kurt and
the Council for a great year!
We're very
excited that Navajo expanded with Lemaster, Smyers and Wrights families, while
Tanner Vinciguerra, Adam Haines and Nicholas Reale move on. Brian Roberts will
take the lead for 2008-09 and I believe Troy Anenson will be the Assistant
Chief.
Haunted Hey Ride is Navajo's event for October. We'll need a head count of how many will be
attending the night of Oct 24th inside Boettler Park. We will need the headcount as Navajo will be
sponsoring the refreshments after the event in the outside pavilion by the
basketball courts. This is a family event. Tickets will be $10 for adult, $6
for kids from age 6 and free for kids under 6.
Deadline: To Brian Roberts by 15th of October.
Also,
Nicholas & I had a fantastic time with Indian Guides over the years, from
our first chief in Cliff Dahlman to Dwayne Haines and Mike Vinciguerra who
guided us over the years and lead us to the Big Medicine point’s champions in
2007! The friendships from Navajo to
the chiefs of the other tribes will be unforgettable! Thanx!
Hope and
pray all of you Father/Sons are as fortunate as I was with
my son as we grew together and are still learning of one another, and truly
have become... Pals Forever
God Bless,
Jeff "Big Rubba Dubba" Reale
PS: I'll
be in touch with the Chiefs and anyone else who wants to participate in this
years' Project: St. Nicholas Returns "Polar Bear Swim" the first
weekend in December (tentatively set for Dano's). Last year we raised $800, this year...anything's possible to see
someone in Speedo’s!
