their ideas for next year’s calendar, so we can get things set up for
2008. Please be prepared to discuss
your ideas for next year’s events.
“Blowin’
Smoke”
Greetings Manikiki Nation,
This is my final Smoke entry as
Nation Chief so I need to start by saying “thank you” to the members of Council
and the tribe chiefs who worked hard to make the year a success. We had strong attendance and participation
all year with a great lineup of events.
We had our most successful fundraiser yet. And we launched a Trailblazer program for the older boys that
will help keep them interested longer while allowing us to put some additional
focus on the younger boys when we set up future Nation events. Bottom line is we had a great year and
things are looking good for the future.
I will be leaving a strong
organization in the capable hands of a new council lead by Kurt “Big Bear”
Leibensperger. I am confident in his
ability to continue our success. He has
already demonstrated strong leadership with his focus on recruiting for the
Nation and I am excited to see what this new Council will do to make us even
better. I am also encouraged to see my
former Sachem and Nation Chief Pat “Running Bull” Duff take the lead role in
getting the Trailblazers up and running.
I will be looking forward to working with him to help make it happen.
I will still be around for one more
year as your Nation Sachem before my son Kyle “Wild Moose” turns 12 and moves
into the Trailblazer Tribe with the other older boys. We will remain active at events and I plan to spend more time with
my Cherokee tribe mates now that my tour of duty as Nation Chief has
ended.
It is all about the boys and I am
including the big boys when I say that.
All the Dad’s have one something in common, is a strong drive to be the
best father we can be by spending time with our boys. This is a very good quality and I enjoy being around quality
people. I have made many new friends
with the Dad’s in this nation and I intend to remain friends for our
lifetime.
In summary, it was an honor to serve
the Manikiki Nation as Chief and as I pass the baton to the new leadership, I
will cherish the memories we have created.
Tonka Hey,

Greetings Manikiki Nation,
For our October event we will once again be attending a
University of Akron Football Game. The
day is Saturday, October 13th and it is an evening game which we will kick off
with our annual tailgate party. This will be a lot of fun.
I need to start by saying “good job” Mohawks for running a
fine campout. It was well organized and
a great facility. Having burgers and
dogs on Friday night was a nice addition and many hope it becomes a
tradition. I also appreciate my
Cherokee tribe mates for good companionship around the campfire and help making
the campout a lot of fun for the Moose clan.
Remember, what goes on at campouts stays at campouts.
That was some set of Nation Games Dan “Big Rock” Hickman and
his Crazy Crow Tribe came up with. I
understand it took three meetings at Dano’s Lakeside Bar to conjure up those
deranged plans. I will give them credit
when it is due; they wanted to do something we would all remember and talk
about for the rest of our lives and that goal was successfully
accomplished. Thanks guys for a great
time and thank you Dan for leaving your van in a good spot for me to take
shelter from the rain of water balloons.
War Chief: Kurt “Big Bear” Leibensperger 330-699-4734,
330-606-1944 kurtleib@hotmail.com
Tonka Hey!
What an outstanding
weekend at Camp Fitch! Andrew and I had
a really fun weekend, and from talking to everyone else, it was truly one of
the better campout’s we’ve done!
Everything from the weather, to the activities, to the camp itself was
first class. Big thanks to the Mohawk
for putting together the entire weekend, to the Crow for putting together a
very memorable Nation Games and to my fellow Apache for setting up a really
cool fire ceremony.
We have a fun fall ahead,
including our Akron Zips -Temple game on Saturday, October 13th. We tailgate at 4pm, with the kickoff at
6pm. Mark your calendar for the Ghoul
Walk on Sunday, November 4th, which is an old Indian Guides
tradition that we are resurrecting from the grave. Get with your tribes and make up the best scare you
can! The new date should also allow for
you to get in the trick or treat in your neighborhoods, and have fun on the
Ghoul Walk the following weekend! Who
says Halloween has to be over in October anyways!!!
Before I close out, I’d
like to thank everyone who’s agreed to serve on Council next year, and everyone
who’s agreed to serve as chiefs for your tribes in 2008 as well. One of the reasons things work so well in
our Nation is that we have many dads willing to step up and help out. Thanks for all your time, ideas and
energy!
Medicine Man: John “Sits
By Fire” Waller 330-867-5726,
330-256-4430 john.waller@wilsontool.com
Tonka Hey!
This is my last report as Medicine Man and will be back again next
month with my first report as War Chief. I want to acknowledge the Mohawk for a great job putting together
the Fitch campout. My boys and I along
with all of our tribe mates had a great time being on the water like that. The Crow deserve a hand for holding the most
entertaining Nation Games we have ever had. And on behalf of my Apache
brethren, thanks to all who helped put up and take down the teepee and build
the fire for the fire ceremony.
Finally, the Big Medicine race is over with the fall campout as the
last event for this year. We will make
the final tally of campout attendance and all other applicable bonus points and
announce the winning tribe at the Annual Father/Son Banquet in December. I can tell you that it was a tight, tight
campaign. Kudos to all tribes!
Story
Teller: Tom “Sitting Hawk” Turner 330-493-7380,
330-543-8024 tturner@walsh.edu
Being part of the
Manikiki Nation has been a wonderful experience. From moving the Kickapoo Tribe from North Canton to the Great
Nation to the North has been nothing short of an incomparable experience for all
the Kickapoo. Over the past half dozen
more years we have made fast and forever friendships and have truly discovered
the magic of “Pals Forever” with all of you.
Flying Hawk (Tim) and
Soaring Hawk (Jeff) are 12 and look forward to being part of the next
developmental phase blazing ahead with new memories and Father/Son/Friend
experiences. I have no doubt that in
between the text messages, school friends, and experiences of growing up that
there will always be welcome room for stopping life to do activities with this
terrific Father/Son organization.
It has been an honor to
serve as a tribal chief and your Wampum Bearer and on the Council this past year
in a lesser role as Story Teller. I’ve
learned most of all that when life throws challenges and fun opportunities in
our path, the dads and boys of the Manikiki Nation are there for you.
Pals Forever.
Wampum
Bearer: Dwayne “Big Bad Wolf” Haines 330-699-0972,
330-419-1002 dghaines@babcock.com
What great weather for
our campout. Camp Fitch is really a nice camp for the boys and Dads. I
hope all had a good time. I know the Navajo did. U of A is off to a
2-0 start in the MAC. It would be great
to see a nice turnout at the game this Saturday.
Good Luck to Jeff Reale,
our new Navajo Chief. Thanks to Mike. Thanks to Scott Summers for
the great job he did as Nation Chief.
Tally
Keeper: Rich “Howling Wolf” Ashley 330-882-2532,

OK this is my last Smoke
as Tallykeeper, and since I said all of the sappy emotional stuff last
month, I’ll just thank all of you for your cooperation and help.
I’ll miss you guys.

Thanks.

Apache: Charles "Kicking
Buffalo" Campbell 330-854-3077, 330-264-5383x237 kickingbuffalo@sbcglobal.net
Tonka Hey Mighty Apache!
We really enjoyed the fall
campout at Camp Fitch, with maybe an exception for the Chiefs Sacrifice Relay
race. Although being there for the
water-ballooning of Scott "Singin' Moose" made up for the pies in the
face. A big thanks to all that
helped us set-up and takedown the tipi and council fire.
Be sure to congratulate
and welcome our new chief John Mattheos. If you haven't done so, let John know if you plan on attending the
Akron Zips game on Oct. 13th and forward a check to him for $5 for each
ticket.
Also, put some thought
into the Ghoul Walk coming up November 4th. Our tribe will be responsible for one of the stops on the trail
where we will set up a "scare". If anyone has some good
Halloween props or effects, let us know so we can scare the feathers off of
some braves.
Arapaho: Paul “Big Foot” Scheatzle 330-832-0304,
330-323-7683 paulscheatzle@hotmail.com
Thanks to the nation
leadership and the sponsoring tribes for a great campout. Camp Fitch is
definitely worth the drive.
All Arapaho tribe members
please start to formulate some ideas for the ghoul walk. Jeff Backer has
graciously volunteered (was railroaded) to head up the project.
I hope to see all of you
at the football game next Saturday. Go
Zips!
Blackhawk: Jeff “Jumping Fish” Williamson 330-245-1828,
503-704-3580 jrwilliamson@purefishing.com
Tonka hey,
I hope everyone had a
great campout. Thanks go out to
everyone who organized and help facilitate the campout. Nice job guys. I know
Bradley and I had a great time. Perfect
weather, a great facility and a bunch of fun activities. Thanks go out to Shane Kelliher for getting
the tribe motivated to win the scavenger hunt.
Thanks to Joe Durkin for
filling in as new chief for Todd. For
those that didn't get AU football tickets please let me know if you need them. See you then.
Cherokee: Frank “Chasing Tail” Williams 330-794-2707,
330-715-3953 FWilliams@ci.akron.oh.us
This will be my final Smoke entry as your Cherokee
Chief. It has been an honor and
privilege to do so. Thanks to all of you for your prompt responses, support and
filling in on the days I could not be there.
My son's loved wearing the big head dresses and I encourage all the dads
to give it a try. I hope to see
everyone at the next event. Good luck
Sam!!!
Sam “Buffalo Hump” Ewing samewing@sbcglobal.net
Finally, after 5 years in
the Cherokee tribe, the fates have conspired to make me CHIEF Buffalo
Hump. First, a little history on my
Indian name. Buffalo Hump was an actual
war chief of the Penateka band of the Comanche Indians in my home state of
Texas. If you read the Lonesome Dove books by Larry McMurty, you may
remember Buffalo Hump. I thought the
name was catchy and liked the connection to Texas and to make it even better,
my wife HATES the name.
I'm looking forward to
being Chief and know it will lead to more "memory making" with my son
(kudos to Dan Hickman). A note on the
great campout at the marvelous Camp Fitch. On the way to our Sunday morning fishin' mission, my son turned to
me and said, "Thanks Dad for taking me camping this weekend. You're the best dad ever." Thank you Indian Guides brothers for helping
make me "the best dad ever".
Comanche: Jeff “Last Hawk” Pearce 330-644-4749,
330-714-7892 jeffp@pearceengineering.com
Wow, what a
camp-out!! Tucker and I had a great time. Thanks to all the braves
who put it together. Great job guys!!
So here I am writing my
last smoke article as chief of the Mighty Comanche Tribe. Hard to believe
that two years as chief have already gone by. I'm glad I did it! It
gave me the chance to get better acquainted with the other chiefs and many guys
from other tribes. I would recommend to anyone that they step up and
volunteer as the chief of their tribe, you will be glad you did!!
Now it's time to move on
to my next phase of Indian Guides, as Tally Keeper on the Nation Council!
I'm looking forward to still being a part of the Great Manikiki Nation
Leadership! Thanks to all the outgoing Council members, especially
Singing Moose! And thanks to all the incoming Council members and chiefs
for volunteering for the year to come. I look forward to working with
each of you.
And finally a big Tonka
Hey Thank You to Tom Knoebel who is the Mighty Comanche incoming chief!!
(again)
Jeff Pearce
Last Hawk
Outgoing Comanche Chief
I’m glad to be back serving my third term as Chief
of the Mighty Comanche, and Logan is really excited to finally wear the “big
feathers”! Many thanks to Last Hawk for serving as Chief the last two
years. The Comanche say goodbye to a number of older and outgoing braves
this month, but we also look forward to welcoming a number of new fathers-sons
into the Comanche family. More details next month.
Tom Knoebel
Fighting Eagle
Incoming Comanche Chief
Creek: Kevin “Running Pike” Adkins
330-645-6542 kevina@amerimail.com
Tonka Hey,
The Creek Tribe had a
GREAT time at the campout. The camp was wonderful and the Nation Games were
just fantastic (say the little braves!). I heard many people say we need to go to Fitch more often. Definitely one of the best campouts ever!! Thanks to the Mohawk and Crow for doing such
a great job! Sorry about the night hike
being a little too rough for some (although many said it was great). We will take it a little easier on future
hikes. I had a great year as chief and
wish Dave Rownd well.
The great Creek Euchre
tournament was won by Brad Borne and yours truly (it has become obvious that
through all the early years of Dave Rownd’s card success, he was being carried
by Jeff Plum!).
Thanks to all the
outgoing chiefs and council members. Thanks
to all of you, this was a GREAT year for the Manikiki Nation! Special thanks to Singing Moose for his
outstanding leadership and his willingness to always go the extra mile. Moose, you should be proud of the job you
did, we are all proud of you. THANKS!
Creek birthday wishes go
out to Scot “Blowing Cloud” Kingan and Eric “Biting Shark” Rohweder.
Crow: Dan “Big Rock” Hickman
330-896-7164, 330-472-7010 nhickman3@aol.com
What a great
campout! We as a tribe accomplished
what we wanted at the Nation Games. We
wanted the event to include both father and son, make it a short event compared
to the long drawn out events of the past, and we made an event that the boys
will remember forever with the whip cream pies in the face of the outgoing
chiefs. Moose was pretty surprised with
all of the water balloons, another event the boys will remember. I know Moose will never forget.
I now pass the Head dress
to the next Chief Jim Livers to take over the Mighty Mighty Crow. Please help him with his Chief duties of
this large tribe by answering his emails and phone calls, and by getting your
monies to him as early as possible. I
greatly enjoyed being the Crow Tribe Chief and am looking forward to being on
Council in the upcoming year.
When you’re driving thru
Pennsylvania, please “WATCH FOR FALLING ROCK.” Love
you guys.
Jim Livers jlivers@neo.rr.com
Tonka Hey Mighty Crows.
What a great campout.
Thanks to the Mohawk for sponsoring and doing a great job. Thanks also to Dan
“Big Rock” Hickman for the memorable games and his leadership last year. Hope
to see many of you at the Zips game.
“Happy Birthday” to
Austin “Sparrow” Hawk and Devon “Flying Hawk” Green.
Kickapoo: Paul “Running Deer” Mallue 330-497-9943, 330-209-4366
malluep@firstenergycorp.com
The fall campout at Camp
Fitch was just outstanding. What a
beautiful site and the weather made the weekend even more special. Thanks to the Mohawk and Crow tribes for
putting on a first class event. The Nation
Games with whipped cream and water balloons were, as promised, very
memorable. Great job, Dan Hickman.
Looking forward to the
Akron U. football game on Saturday, October 13th. I hope all of the Kickapoo can attend. Please let me know if you have any ideas for the Ghoul Walk at
Camp Y-Noah in early November. Each
tribe will be sponsoring a station.
Mandan: Jeff “White Eagle” Rand 330-899-0735,
330-813-1122 jrand@hbchemical.com
Tonka Hey,
It looks like we have
some new tribe members. Not only is
this great for our whole tribe but should add some excitement for the next
campout. Once again, I think the Big
Joe Mattingly was the only representative we had at the fall campout, which I
heard was excellent. Hope Joe held his
own during Nation Games.
I hope we all support out
new chief, Bill Spaid. Good luck.
Mingo:
Scott “Sitting Bull” Kanis 330-753-8650,
330-472-2373 scotty-dawg@sbcglobal.net
Tonka Hey! from your
former Mingo Chief Sitting Bull. We want to thank the sponsoring tribes
for the great time we had at our fall camp out. We think that our new
braves had a good time and think that the spirit of the Manikiki Nation was
truly at it's finest.
To all the tribes, don't
forget to be thinking of idea's for you tribe’s scare for the Ghoul Walk.
To our Mingo braves, we will be holding a fathers meeting to plan our
scare the week after the football game, dta at a later date. I hope to
see you all there; so far we have most of our new braves at the game.
Please call me if you need tickets for the game.
Mohawk: Brian "Fighting

Navajo: Mike “Eagle Eye” Vinciguerra 330-699-0207, 440-669-3264 MiVinciguer@aol.com
Hope everyone had a good
time at Fitch. Best luck to our new chief - Jeff -Big Rubba Dubba- Reale!!
Jeff "Big Rubba Dubba" Reale ru4reale22@hotmail.com
Thanks to everyone that
was involved for Camp Fitch-the weather, activities, food, fellowship and fun
were all perfect! I want to thank Mike
Vinciguera, our very active Navajo tribe members and all the past Navajo
Chiefs for their insights on this particular position. Nicholas-"Wise Owl" is very
excited about the coming year and as a father, your excitement is tenfold as
this just strengthens the "Pals Forever" motto. Wise Owl even wants to say, "Thank you
to the new fire makers of the ceremony, the new teepee, and for our great night
walk … it was a lot of fun. Peace, Wise Owl & Big Rubba Dubba
