Officer Reports
Nation Chief: Kurt “Big Bear” Leibensperger 330-699-4734,
330-606-1944 kurtleib@hotmail.com
Tonka Hey Mighty Manikiki Nation!
We have many fun events coming up that you will read about in the Smoke, including
our Spring Campout, our annual trek to see the Akron Aeros and Fireworks at
Canal Park, a new event---the Barberton Speedway, and I do hope you all make
time for all these events.
There is one event, though, that I
take a personal interest in, and even though it's not an "official"
event on our calendar, I do hope you will support it as our Nation has in the
past. It's the Green Relay for Life, and it's June 20-21st at Green High
School. If you are not familiar with the concept, the event is designed
to raise money for cancer research and to commemorate/remember friends and
family who have survived cancer, and those who have lost their battle with
cancer.
Our Nation will be selling food at
this event all night, and serving breakfast in the morning. We will again
be getting food donated---see Jim Cross if you'd like to donate some to this
event. The event starts Friday afternoon, goes all night, and wraps up
Saturday morning. You can purchase a candle to support the event, and write
down the names of people you know who have fought cancer. All money
raised goes to cancer research.
Chances are you know somebody with
cancer. Both my parents are cancer survivors, and a few years ago I
lost a cousin who was my age to the disease. This is a worthwhile event,
a chance to educate your sons about this disease, and is actually a really fun
event as well. I know my kids have walked the past 2 years, and have
enjoyed the experience. I hope to see lots of you at Green High School
June 20th and 21st.
War Chief: John “Sits By Fire” Waller 330-867-5726,
330-256-4430 john.waller@wilsontool.com
Way to go Apache brothers on a great
Y Overnighter and welcome to Larry & Noah Herbert and Tim, Addison &
Parker Locke to our tribe also! A
special thanks to Scott Summers, Jim Cross and Jim Livers for their
contributions to a successful event. You
guys are honorary Apache!
A note to all Tribe Chiefs: Now is the time to start putting your
succession plan into place before it gets down to the last minute in September.
A Tribe Chief should serve one year and
turn the reins over to another Big Brave to take on the role next and so on. It is every father’s responsibility and honor
to eventually take his turn at the helm of his tribe.
Fathers that haven’t been Tribe
Chiefs yet, I know what you are thinking about taking on another responsibility
in your already hectic lives, but let me assure you, being a Tribe Chief is the
best thing you will ever do in the Indian Guides, for yourselves and your
son(s). Your list of friends and
contacts will swell as a result and your boys will meet other kids they would
never have otherwise.
Do yourself and your son(s) a favor
and become a Tribe Chief as soon as you can. You will not regret it!
Sachem: Scott “Singin’ Moose” Summers 330-644-9110,
330-606-6965 scotts@rolandus.com
I will start by saying thanks to all
those who contributed books to the Beverly "Grandma" Summers Memorial
fund. To date we have collected over 300 kids’ books and over $1000 which
will go towards buying books for the Green Primary School Library.
Donations can still be made at First Merit Bank.
The YMCA late nighter was a lot of
fun. We had over 30 boys try out for the Guitar Hero competition which
was narrowed down to 8 finalists. Carter "Grey Feather" Hickman
was the eventual winner but not without some stiff competition.
Congratulations to all the boys who participated.
It looks like we have some great events lined up for the summer starting with the
campout. Kyle "Wild Moose" and I can't wait!!
Medicine
Man: Jim “Iron back” Cross 330-245-1326, 330-697-9121 jcross009@neo.rr.com
I like to thank everyone who came
out to cut wood this weekend at Ynoah for our spring campout. We plan on setting up another date to cut
more wood for every individual tribe use, I will inform you of the date once I
have set up.
Story
Teller: Dan “Big
Rock” Hickman 330-896-7164,
330-472-7010 nhickman3@aol.com
You have noticed that everything an
Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the World always
works in circles, and everything tries to be round.....
The Sky is round, and I have heard
that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its
greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nest in circles, for theirs is the
same religion as ours....Even the seasons form a great circle in their
changing, and always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a
circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power
moves.

Wampum Bearer: Dwayne “Big Bad Wolf” Haines 330-699-0972,
330-419-1002 dghaines@babcock.com
Chiefs: Looks like we have
some great events lined up for spring and fall. Keep the excitement
going within your tribe. Financials continue to look good with
everyone’s’ great stewardship. Unfortunately Adam and I could not make
the all nighter, but it sounded like it went very well.
With the spring campout approaching
this is a good time to add some members. The campout is always a good
sell.
Tally
Keeper: Jeff “Last Hawk” Pearce 330-645-6075, 330-714-7892 jeffp@pearceengineering.com
Once again I sit down to right
another Smoke Report. Two years as a chief of the Mighty Comanche Tribe and now
a year at Tally Keeper, I’ve written about 30 of these things and I can never say
enough about the Indian Guides program and this Nation! Month after month we have great events that
make lasting memories for me and my son!
I recently found a picture of me and
my dad in our headdresses taken sometime in the early 70s. That picture is now framed and on display in
my kitchen. It brings back wonderful memories
of the times I spent with my dad as a boy!
My dad is still alive and I don’t miss any opportunity to tell him I
love him, and I want to say thank you to him over and over for all those life
lessons he has taught me.
As many of you are aware from the
emails that go around among the Nation, there are members who have recently
lost their fathers (and mothers), so don’t wait, tell your dad and mom how much
they mean to you. Someday you’ll
hopefully hear the same from your son!!
And a big Tonka Hey to the Apache
Tribe!! We had a great time at the Y over-nighter and of course we can’t wait
for the campout! Although as my fellow
Comanche Tribe member has so graciously noted, it was easier to do when I was
not quite so old!!
Web Spinner: Charles
"Kicking Buffalo" Campbell 330-854-3077,
330-264-5383x237 kickingbuffalo@sbcglobal.net
The tribe sections of the website is
lacking in content. We only have
graphics for three tribes. So as an
incentive to read the smoke, and to get representative graphics for each of the
tribes, I will be hiding a small buffalo in the body of the on-line version of
the Smoke Signals. The first three
tribes that send me an e-mail with the location of the hidden buffalo will have
a logo, either existing or new created in both raster and vector formats. So read on and happy hunting!

Apache:
John "Fire Stick" Matheos 330-864-6899, 330-418-3300 jmatheos@peoplesservices.com
Apache! Thank you all for your help
at the YMCA all-nighter. The boys seemed to have Great time and the dads were
whipped.
I also want to welcome aboard our
newest tribe members -
The Locke Family - Tim (Tekodia),
Addison (age 9, Busy Badger), and Parker (Curious Bear, age 5).
The Herbert Family - Larry (Straight
Arrow) and Noah (age 5, Eagle Feather)
We are very fortunate to have you as
members of the Apache.
Looking forward to seeing you all at
the camp out (please mail me your wampum soon).
Happy Birthday to Addison Locke,
Vincent Costello, and Mr. “still not 40” Campbell
Arapaho: Paul “Big Foot” Scheatzle 330-832-0304,
330-323-7683 paulscheatzle@hotmail.com
The Arapaho tribe had a great time
at the over-nighter.
Thank you to everyone who helped
cut wood for the campout.
We're looking forward to another
great Spring Y-Noah campout.
Blackhawk: Todd “Sly Fox” Mellon 330-645-9456 330-819-7762
tmellon@primebusinesssolutions.net
I just wanted to thank everyone for
showing up to the Y Overnighter. I know
everyone had a blast. Let’s make the
upcoming Campout a time to remember. I
would love to see a record turnout. That
would be great. Until then..Tonka Hey.
Cherokee:
Sam “Buffalo Hump” Ewing 330-245-1138, 513-907-9860
samewing@sbcglobal.net
As you recall, the Cherokee tribe
is hosting the spring campout at Y-Noah May 30 – June 1. Thanks to Singin’ Moose, Big Dog and Running
Horse from the Cherokee and Scott “Star Warrior” Veney from the Creek Tribe for
helping me saw and split wood at Y-Noah for the fire rings this year. Another date will be announced soon for
another wood-splitting opportunity. Please try to make it out to help.
Now we need to meet to finalize the
schedule and logistics for the campout. We will be meeting poolside on Sunday afternoon, May 18th 2:00 pm
to get-r-done. Bring the little braves
so they can splash around while we pow-wow. Look for an email with details.
I also need to get payment from all
going to the campout by May 20th ($130 dad/son, $20 each add’l son)
Comanche:
Tom “Fighting Eagle”
Knoebel 330-882-2387 TKnoebel@tribute.com
The Comanche had a great time at the
Late Night Swim though no one in the tribe made it past about 1:30am. We
are also relieved that Golden Eagle has such a hard head which allowed him to
inflict more damage to the pool deck than it did to him!
<Thanks, by the way, to all those who inquired about the corn hole
boards at the late-nighter; if you are interested in purchasing a set, those
and others are available. I can make blank or custom ones as well.
Email me for details.>
We are looking forward to a Comanche
family cookout at Crazy Cloud Ausel’s house on May 18th – mark your calendars
now! Fighting Eagle and Slithering Snake are ready to take on ANYONE in
corn hole, so bring your “A-game”. Remember, this is a family picnic, so
bring your wives/gf, all your kids, and a side dish to share. Thanks
Crazy Cloud and Bright Spirit for hosting!
Happy belated birthday to Jeff “Last
Hawk” Pearce; the Comanche Tribe wants to thank you for continuing to serve the
Nation at such an advanced age. You are an inspiration to all of us
younger… much younger… members.
Creek:
Dave “Brave Buckeye” Rownd 330-494-5544, 330-352-4747
drownd@starkmetal.com
Tonka Hey!! What a great time
we had at the Hall of Fame. Sometimes we forget about the special places
in our own back yard!!
Happy Birthdays to John Rownd (Great
Grandson from the HOF quiz) and Trent Kingan and big braves Aaron Foust, John
Stroia and Dave Rownd. Another year older for us big braves and losing
bets for the guys who didn’t think we would make it this far!! Looking
forward to a fun summer!!
Crow: Jim “Buffalo Wing” Livers 330-334-8137,
330-807-6781 jlivers@neo.rr.com
Thanks to the Apache Tribe for a
great late nighter at the Y. I hope
everybody had a great time. Next up is the spring camp out at Camp Y-Noah.
It’s later than normal this year,
May 30-June 1. I need all camp out
money by the next Longhouse, May 20th. Cost
is $130.00 for father/son, $20.00 for extra son’s.
There are no April B-days. Have a safe spring and we will see you soon.

Navajo: Jeff "Big Rubba Dubba" Reale 330-896-6256, 330-329-5041 ru4reale22@hotmail.com
The representatives for the Navajo
had a nice time at the Overnighter at the YMCA, thanx to everyone that
organized the event! Our prayers go out
to Scott Summers and his family on the loss of his Mother. Special Birthday wishes go out to Adam
"Raging Wolf" Adams on the 21st of May and Nicholas "Wise
Owl" Reale on the 14th of May.
Don't forget your Moms on Mother's
Day (we'll probably see each other at the stores on the Sat before). The Navajo has decided to return to
"Clay's Park" for their event on Sunday the 10th of August! This will
be open for the entire family-details will follow when we get closer!
