Chief’s Action Items Summary

The July family picnic is free and the August event is pay as you go, so you will not need to collect any more money until the campout.  We will need an approximate headcount for the picnic so we can plan accordingly. Please use these open family events as an opportunity to bring some friends into the nation.  Also, we are inviting Manikiki Nation alumni to the family picnic as well, so spread the word.

Non-golfers, join your Guides buddies, past and present, at the 2007 Marvin Capps Alumni Golf Outing on Saturday September 22nd at Chenoweth G.C.  Only $20 to share in the fun and food.  Just fill in the entry form and note that you just want to hang out.

The Nation won third place among all the youth organizations that participated in the Green Memorial Day parade.  Way to go Guides!

August Event

Great Trail Festival in Malvern, Ohio

Saturday, August 25th Time TBD

Fall Campout

Camp Fitch

Friday evening - Sunday morning, September 28th-30th

The Mohawk Tribe, with the help of the co-sponsoring Crow Tribe, has decided to take us back to Camp Fitch located right on Lake Erie in Northwest PA.  It has been a few years since we last visited Camp Fitch, and the veteran Nation members are excited to return.  Camp Fitch is one of the nicest YMCA camps within driving distance.  It has some similarities to Camp Y-Noah with horse back riding, stations with a climbing wall, bow and arrows, BB guns, real .22 rifle shooting, and an indoor sports center for games and soccer.  The Camp has nice cabins with indoor plumbing and it is right on Lake Erie which will make for an awesome fire ceremony.  Cost is $140 for father and sons.

Nation Officer Reports

Nation Chief: Scott “Singin’ Moose” Summers 330-644-9110, 330-606-6965 scotts@rolandus.com

Sunday July 29th is our annual family picnic.  For years the family picnic has been part of the Manikiki Nation tradition and we are hoping that this year will be the start of a new tradition.  We have invited our sister organization, Indian Princesses, and alumni members of both Nations.  This will be a great time and I hope to continue to be involved in this event for years to come when my family is part of our alumni.  We will be eating first so you can bring hot covered dishes.  Then we have an afternoon of fun activities planned starting with the Nation games that got rained out at the spring campout.  Bring your swim suits because there is a nice lake for swimming and fishing and we will have the opportunity to play various organized games on the grounds.  The headline event is a “one on one” basketball game between rival Nation Chiefs, Bob “Big Bear” Mahaney vs. yours truly Scott “Singin’ Moose” Summers.  Randy Wallace is the official bookie who will be taking bets on the action.  (Editor’s note.  I’m not sure “action” is an appropriate word to describe this clash of Titans.)

The future looks bright for the Manikiki Nation.  We just had our annual budget meeting last Tuesday, July 17th to work out the plans for next year and set up a schedule of events.  The meeting was held in my back yard and it was very well attended with incoming and outgoing chiefs from eleven tribes participating.  We have a new calendar in the back of this Smoke news letter that lists the schedule for next year with tribe sponsors and a tentative budget.  (The final budget will be voted on by tribe chiefs at the August longhouse meeting).  Please take a look at the Nation events calendar and start marking your calendar right now because there is going to be lot’s of fun activities including some new events.

Finally, we voted on leadership for next year and I would like to congratulate our current War Chief Kurt “Big Bear” Leibensperger for being elected as next year’s Nation Chief.  We also have a fine group of men who have stepped up to serve on next year’s Council so we are positioned for another strong year.  Kurt is very proactive and has plans for increasing our recruiting efforts as we move forward.  Please take a moment to talk to Kurt at the family picnic.

War Chief: Kurt “Big Bear” Leibensperger 330-699-4734, 330-606-1944 kurtleib@hotmail.com

Thank you to all who have agreed to serve on next year's Council:

John Waller, War Chief;

Scott Summers, Sachem;

Dwayne Haines, Wampum Bearer;

 Jim Cross, Medicine Man;

Jeff Pearce, Talleykeeper;

Charles Campbell, Webspinner; and

Dan Hickman, Storyteller.

Thanks also to outgoing Council members:

Pat Duff;

Rich Ashley;

Jamie Wiggins; and

Tom Turner.

Also thanks to all the incoming and outgoing chiefs.  I look forward to serving with you next year in my position as Nation Chief.

We have lined up a number of events where we will be going out to the community to recruit new members.    As of this writing, I just returned from our recruitment event at Boettler Park Kids Day, and I can personally tell you there is great interest in our program.  People want to join...we just have to go out and find them.  Thanks to Jim Cross for coordinating this event, and thanks to all who showed up to help out and talk with people.  There will be more recruitment events upcoming, and I hope one and all can help.  New blood and new members are vital to our Nation, and it's something we should all work to make happen!

That's all for now.

Medicine Man: John “Sits By Fire” Waller 330-867-5726, 330-256-4430 john.waller@wilsontool.com

Tonka Hey!

As plans for the end of this year and next year start to unfold it appears we are in for some great, great times with our boys!  We have many dads that have stepped up this year to make the Guides program the success that it is and we have a few more guys stepping up to make next year easy for the rest of us.  Please consider becoming your tribe’s chief or becoming a Nation Council member and spreading some of the responsibility in the next year or so.  I promise you will not regret it.

The Navajo continue to lead the Big Medicine Point totals for this year so far, but are followed closely by the Apache, Mohawk, Arapaho and the Cherokee.  There are still a handful of tribes that could rise up with strong event attendance, Longhouse attendance and Smoke Signal participation from your chief. “Good Luck” to all Manikiki Tribes as we round out the last part of the 2006-2007 season.

Story Teller: Tom “Sitting Hawk” Turner 330-493-7380, 330-543-8024 tturner@walsh.edu

Wampum Bearer: Dwayne “Big Bad Wolf” Haines 330-699-0972, 330-419-1002 dghaines@babcock.com

Tonka Hey to all the Nation.  I was not able to attend the budget meeting, so please send me the budget that was worked out.  Hope that you are all having a fine summer and are looking forward to the Family Picnic next week.  Thanks to our Council and tribe chiefs who keep things humming along

Tally Keeper: Rich “Howling Wolf” Ashley 330-882-2532, 330-807-9104 rich@awrsofakron.com

The recent budget meeting made me realize how quickly the end of our time in Indian Guides is approaching.  My son turned 12 in April and he’s closing in on six years of perfect attendance.  Guides has been so important to making sure that at least once a month I set time aside for us to be together.  I think that over the years I will appreciate even more how important that was.

Apache: Charles "Kicking Buffalo" Campbell 330-854-3077, 330-264-5383x237 kickingbuffalo@sbcglobal.net

MIghty Apache, wow is this summer is really rolling by quickly, so I hope to see everyone at the July 29th Family Picnic!  Remember this is a free family event, so bring a covered dish to go along with the hotdogs and hamburgers provided by the Nation.  We'll start to eat around 2:00pm and will have the rest of the afternoon for Nation Games, the fishing contest etc.  See the end of this issue of the Smoke for more details.

Speaking of Smoke Signals; we will be switching to e-mail/web centric distribution at the beginning of the year. Meaning that unless you let me know that you would like a hard copy mailed to you, only an e-mail version will be sent.  We're doing this as a cost saving measure because most of the membership has easy access to e-mail and we can get it out faster without the time needed to print label and mail each edition of Smoke Signals.

Arapaho: Paul “Big Foot” Scheatzle 330-832-0304, 330-323-7683 paulscheatzle@hotmail.com

It was good to see everybody at the Aeros game and then at our tribe barbecue ay my house.  Thanks to all who came.  It was a good opportunity to get everybody up to speed on the Nation’s plans for this fall and next year.

Blackhawk: Jeff “Jumping Fish” Williamson 330-245-1828, 503-704-3580 jrwilliamson@purefishing.com

Tonka Hey Blackhawk's.  Hope you all are having a great summer and had a great time at the Aero's game.  I look forward to seeing everyone at the Family Picnic.  Please let me know if you will be attending so I have a head count.

Please let me know if you still need a hard copy of Smoke mailed to you, otherwise we are going electronic.

See everyone next week.

Cherokee: Frank “Chasing Tail” Williams 330-794-2707, 330-715-3953 FWilliams@ci.akron.oh.us

Comanche: Jeff “Last Hawk” Pearce 330-644-4749, 330-714-7892 jeffp@pearceengineering.com

Tonka Hey!  I want to first thank everyone who came out to support the Relay for Life, my kids loved selling the snow cones and popcorn.

Next, I want to thank Tom Knoebel for his commitment to the Comanche Tribe and the Manikiki Nation!  Tom has once again stepped up to become the Chief of the Mighty Comanche.  After years of service as chief and a council member, while enjoying his time with his older son Josh, he is once again taking extra time to support Indian Guides as he continues with his younger son Logan!  Thanks Tom!

Hope to see everyone at the picnic!

Creek: Kevin “Running Pike” Adkins 330-645-6542 kevina@amerimail.com

The Creek Tribe is looking forward to the Family Picnic and we hope our good weather continues.

Creek Tribe birthday wishes go out to Tim Stroia.

Kickapoo: Paul “Running Deer” Mallue 330-497-9943, 330-209-4366 malluep@firstenergycorp.com

I hope everyone is having a great summer.  Baseball is coming to an end for most of us so we can now take a break and do some other things (like vacation) before school starts.

The next Nation event is the Family Picnic on July 29th from 2:00–7:00 pm at the FOP Lodge/Grounds.  There will be swimming, fishing, and the Nation games that we did not do at Camp Y-Noah, and lots of good food.  The Nation will be providing burgers, dogs and brats.  Each family is asked to bring a covered dish to share.  There is no admission charge.

The next two events will be the Great Trail Festival in Malvern on August 25th and then the Fall Campout from September 28-30.  More details on these events can be found in this newsletter.

Happy birthday to Alec Johnson who turns 7 on the 23rd of July, Jack Hewitt who turns 6 on the 13th and his brother Ryan who will be 5 on the 18th.

Mandan: Jeff “White Eagle” Rand 330-899-0735, 330-813-1122 jrand@hbchemical.com

Tonka Hey!  Summer is now well past the half way mark and September will soon be upon us.  Remember the fall campout is probably the best event of the year so read Smoke and put it on your schedule.  The Mandan still needs a Chief.  I am unable to continue with the duties because of work issues.  Being Chief is very rewarding and the kids love the headdress.  Hope to see all of you soon.

Mingo: Scott Sitting Bull” Kanis 330-753-8650, 330-472-2373 scotty-dawg@sbcglobal.net

Mohawk: Brian "Fighting Cardinal” Morris 330-896-1394, 330-933-2372 bdmorris@aol.com

Looking forward to the Family picnic, I hope everyone can attend.  This is a family event at the Akron FOP lodge from 2:00pm-7:00pm.

Happy birthday to Alex Cross from the Mohawk Tribe.

Navajo: Mike “Eagle Eye” Vinciguerra 330-699-0207, 440-669-3264 MiVinciguer@aol.com

Happy b-day to Mark Dahlman!!

Just a reminder the next event is the family picnic Sunday July 29th. Everyone welcome Jeff Reale as the next chief for the upcoming year.  PLEASE be kind and gentle to our new chief!!

“Blowin’ Smoke”

I had a lunch meeting with the new director of the Green Y, Lori Lautenschlager, and she seems to be very supportive of Guides.  She offered to help us in any way she can.   I mentioned to her that we were discussing a fall recruitment drive to build up some of our smaller tribes, and she offered concrete ways they can help us grow our program...

1)  A full page in their fall program guide, sent to all 8000 Green members, spotlighting Guides (and Princesses, Trailblazers and Maidens as well), letting us outline our 2007-08 event schedule, and promote our programs.   This will go to press the first of August, so it is essential that we set our program lineup for the fall and winter before that time.

2)  Do a recruitment event at the Y, with us setting up our big tepee outside for added effect.  The newsletter article can mention it, and I think we should try and do something similar to what the scouts do in the fall.  It's a great opportunity to present Guides to many potential members.

3)  Letting us set up a table in the lobby to recruit members whenever we want, but at the following specific Y events...

June 16th---Donuts with Dad event (I will be coming back from vacation then, but if there's interest from Council or chiefs to set something up, I'd help as much as I can.)

August 11---the annual Green Y 5K race.  This event is also a fall program sign up.

October 13th---Y Crazy Days, where the Y advertises a 50% off sign up fee, and where there are usually new members in attendance.

4)  Letting us do a flyer to be sent to the Y Homeschoolers program with over 200 kids involved.

She is also receptive to advertising these programs/events in the local papers (Green Leader, Suburbanite), and even to splitting costs on marketing our programs.   She's also going to look into having the Y take up the cost of printing our membership sign up form, and working to better educate the front desk people about our programs.  She had also noticed our large presence at the Partners with Youth fundraiser, and realizes the importance of our group to the overall Y.

We should try and set up a meeting with the Princess and Maidens chiefs to discuss splitting costs/time slots on these events.

A number of tribes over the past year have complained about shrinking rosters and needing to grow.  This could be a significant opportunity to expand our roster by many, many people!  Would we be able to get Council support on moving on this?  Let me know your thoughts...

Kurt "Big Bear" Leibensperger, War Chief
