Dan
“Big Rock” Hickman – Crow Tribe
Dan is one of fathers responsible
for taking the Crow tribe from near death to the largest and most active tribe
in the Manikiki Nation, and they did it in less than three years. Last year Dan served as the Crow Chief and
this year he stepped up to Nation Council as our Nation Story Teller. Time has
proven that any project Dan is involved with becomes a success story, which is further
demonstrated by the Nation Games at the last campout. It takes leadership
(and a deranged mind) to do something that 200 people will remember for the
rest of their lives. With Dan as our Nation Story Teller, we look forward
to being enlightened at our next campfire ceremony!
Fundraiser/Reverse Raffle
For those out there who haven’t
heard this before, this is where we get all the money for the event
budgets. No selling candy bars or
wrapping paper, or maybe even frozen cookie dough.
All the free events and subsidized
events and little extras we get (like hotdogs and hamburgers Friday night at
the camp-out), are all due to this one night.
So please get those silent auction
items together; solicit donations from local businesses and friends and sell
those ticket! Let’s have a great time
and set our Nation up for another strong year!
A copy of the Sponsorship/Donation form is attached to the end of this
Smoke Signal.

Wow! What a fun time our family, our tribe and our nation had at
Kalahari Resort. Lots of fun with the
slides, wave pool, zip coaster, Mud Hut, and just spending time with my kids
and friends from the Manikiki Nation.
Even though the place is massive, it was a lot of fun seeing many people
from our group all over the resort.
Great job to Todd Mellon and the Blackhawk!
We have many fun events coming up
including the FASCAR race, Hall of Fame outing, YMCA overnighter, Spring
Campout at Y-Noah and more! Hope
everyone can be part of these events, as they give you great opportunities to
spend quality time with your sons.
Now, I need you to allow me a few
minutes on my soapbox, because, here comes the pitch for everyone in this nation
to support our Fundraiser at Guy's Party Center on Saturday, March 1st!
It costs $15,000 or so each year to
run our 12 nation events each year. We
have many costs including rental fees for many sites of our events....our
nation paying the costs for extra sons at our campouts in the spring and
fall...our nation picking up the costs of the Father-Son banquet in
December...paying the way for families whose financial situation means they
can't afford to attend Guides events...our many charitable donations throughout
the year, including Partners with Youth at both the Green Y and Camp Y Noah,
Relay for Life and more! We do a lot of
good for the fathers and sons who participate, but our goodwill extends into
the community!
And pretty much all of it is paid
for by monies raised at our annual fundraiser.
We've not in my 4 years in this nation ever asked a family to sell
cookies, magazines, or anything like this to pay their way. All we ask is you and your significant other
spend a fun evening out with plenty of food, adult beverages, reverse raffle
fun (and other fun games), and a great silent auction. All that is included in the one time charge
of $55 per person, and I can promise you that both you will enjoy
yourselves!!!!
So, I urge you to buy tickets, sell
some to your friends and neighbors, donate silent auction items, and come for
an evening of fun!
Again, it's March 1st at Guy's
Party Center, but monies and silent auction donations are due to your chief
before the next Longhouse on February 12th.
We will recognize all donations received before the event in our event
program, and you can also purchase ads to support our nation.
Thanks in advance for your support of this event!

Tonka Hey!
Happy New Year to all Manikiki
braves and your families! Kalahari was
a great way to end the holiday season and start the new calendar year of IG
events. I may change my name to Sits By
Wave Pool!
Up next are the FAScar Race @
Y-NOAH and the Nation Reverse Raffle @ Guy’s Party Centre. Let’s make sure we
all step up and buy our allotted tickets and perhaps a few more so that we can
ensure another successful budget year for our Nation.
Many big braves have mentioned to
me in passing that they have potential new members they think might like to get
involved in the Guides. This is great
news! Don’t wait to invite them to an
event. The upcoming events I mentioned
earlier are perfect for them to get a feel for what the Guides program is all
about. When they are ready to join,
please forward their contact information to me so we can add them to the Nation
roster and email distribution list. Keep up the great work building this great Nation.

Greetings Manikiki Nation,
The Kalahari event was awesome!
We had a great turnout and everyone loved it. I heard from over 10
Big Braves that would like to make it an annual event.
The fundraiser is coming up fast so
start selling tickets and acquiring lots of silent auction stuff. We
don't want to go back to the days when Manikiki Little Braves walked around the
neighborhood selling Easter candy.

Man: Jim “Iron back” Cross 330-245-1326, 330-697-9121 jcross009@neo.rr.com
The nation fund raiser is
approaching and although everyone’s attendance is important...I would like to
get an update on ticket distribution/sales. There will only be one more longhouse prior to the event so
everyone needs to get their stubs and more importantly money to your chief
soon. Chiefs please contact me and let
me know your status...any ticket trading with other tribes and current
distribution. Please provide one check
per tribe when paying for the tickets. I just need counts and ticket numbers.
Speaking of counts, although the
Mohawk tribe has clearly won big medicine for this year already...as a
courtesy I plan to send each tribal chief a roster of past events to check and
verify attendance. Please check with
your tribe members and let me know.

The First Fire - Cherokee
In the beginning of the world, there
was no fire. The animal people were often cold. Only the Thunders, who lived in
the world beyond the sky arch, had fire. At last they sent Lightning down to an
island. Lightning put fire into the bottom of a hollow sycamore tree.
The animal people knew that the fire
was there, because they could see smoke rising from the top of the tree. But
they could not get to it on account of the water. So they held a council to
decide what to do.
Everyone that could fly or could
swim was eager to go after the fire. Raven said, "Let me go. I am large
and strong."
At that time Raven was white. He
flew high and far across the water and reached the top of the sycamore tree.
While he sat there wondering what to do, the heat scorched all his feathers
black. The frightened Raven flew home without the fire, and his feathers have
been black ever since.
Then the council sent Screech Owl.
He flew to the island. But while he was looking down into the hollow tree, a
blast of hot air came up and nearly burned out his eyes. He flew home and to
this day, Screech Owl's eyes are red.
Then Hooting Owl and Horned Owl were
sent to the island together. But the smoke nearly blinded them, and the ashes
carried up by the wind made white rings about their eyes. They had to come
home, and were never able to get rid of the white rings.
Then Little Snake swam across to the
island, crawled through the grass to the tree, and entered it through a small
hole at the bottom. But the smoke and the heat were too much for him, too. He
escaped alive, but his body had been scorched black. And it was so twisted that
he doubled on his track as if always trying to escape from a small space.
Big Snake, the climber, offered to
go for fire, but he fell into the burning stump and became as black as Little
Snake. He has been the great blacksnake ever since.
At last Water Spider said that she
would go. Water Spider has black downy hair and red stripes on her body. She
could run on top of water and she could dive to the bottom. She would have no
trouble in getting to the island.
"But you are so little, how
will you carry enough fire?" the council asked.
"I'll manage all right,"
answered Water Spider. "I can spin a web." so she spun a thread from
her body and wove it into a little bowl and fastened the little bowl on her
back. Then she crossed over to the island and through the grass. She put one
little coal of fire into her bowl and brought it across to the people.
Ever since, we have had fire. And
the Water Spider still has her little bowl on her back.

I'm a little behind updating the website due to life events but I hope
to have everything up-to-date by the end of the weekend.
It sounds as though everyone had a great time at Kalahari. I was unable to attend so I would appreciate
any photos from the event to add to the website. You can e-mail them, burn them to CD or if you have them on a
memory card, I will have a PC with me at most events. If you are hosting pictures on another site,
let me know and we can put a link to those photos as well.

Tonka Hey Cherokee Brothers, As you
can tell, we have entered into the busiest time of the Manikiki Nation. It was
an exciting and relaxing weekend at Kalahari that launches us into this most
exciting time for Indian Guides. First, it is time to put your best efforts
into the FASCAR competition. Next is the fundraiser. I have tickets for
distribution. If you don’t have yours, or need more, let me know. We also need additional silent auction
items. Don’t forget, we are also
sponsoring the Spring Campout at Y-Noah and will need EVERYONE’S efforts to
make it a success.
Comanche:
Tom “Fighting Eagle”
Knoebel 330-882-2387 TKnoebel@tribute.com
The Comanche had a great time at
Kalahari this month! It was really nice to have the whole tribe together
for this event, and I know everyone had a lot of fun. As a matter of
fact, the boys loved the wave pool so much we’re planning a Tribe trip to the
ocean for Spring Break… probably Maui or one of the other Hawaiian Islands.
Thanks to Pearce Engineering for generously offering to underwrite all expenses
for the trip… including roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations on the beach,
surfing lessons for the boys, private luau for the dads, and medical expenses
for Jim for whichever bone(s) he ends up breaking!
Get your FAScar kit orders in to
your tribe chief ASAP before the January Longhouse on the 15th. The
registration and race have been moved to February 22nd and 23rd, at camp
Y-Noah, so start working on those cars now!
Happy belated birthday to Adam

event. Nice job to all who made it happen. That is the way the
Creek like to rough it on a campout!! The Creek tribe received a lot of
extra tickets to sell for the raffle. If anyone needs some more, please
let me know. We will continue to push them as hard as we can. We
completed our December service project at the Lake YMCA on Dec 15th. The
Creek and the Lake YMCA ran a coat drive and collected many many slightly used
coats for needy families. Happy January birthday to Kevin “Running Pike”

missed a great event. I hope we can make it an annual event. Hats off to the
Blackhawk for coming up with a great one. FAScar is our next event. Let’s get

amount of tickets you need.
Kickapoo: Steve “Silent Eagle” Maxim 330-966-0820 smaxim@maximent.net
The Kickapoo’s service project was
completed at Mercy Medical Hospital on December 13th. The tribe created
holiday ornaments for the patients in the hospital. We had a good turn
out from our tribe and it was complimented with the food and drink that Mercy
Medical donated. Special thanks to Tom Turner for setting up this event.
On January 5th, the Kickapoo tribe
attended an Akron University basketball game against Miami. Thanks to
Mark Folwer and his son Shawn, we were able to use the Pizza Hut gifts for
everyone before the game. This was a great game to watch as Akron crushed
Miami by some 20 points.
The tribe has three birthday
celebrations in the month of December and January. Happy birthday to Alex
(Running Buck) Mallue, Brady (Fighting Eagle) Thompson and Blake (Fearless
Bear) Nicholas
The FASCAR race will be at Camp Y

2008 Manikiki Nation Father and Son Car (FASCAR) Derby
Location: Camp Y - Noah
Race date: Saturday, February 23rd
Times: Races will start
promptly by age group as follows:
Ages 5-7: 9:00 - 10:30
am
Ages 8-9: 10:30 - 12:00
pm
Ages 10-12: 12:00-1:30
pm
Registration: Friday evening,
February 22nd, at the race location, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.
Note: all cars must be
registered on Friday evening; there
will be NO registration of cars the morning of the race!
Car Specifications:
Maximum length: 10.0 inches. There is no minimum, but the distance between the
axles cannot be changed!
Maximum width: 4.5 inches at the widest point, including the axles.
Maximum weight: 16 ounces (one pound). There is no minimum weight.
Maximum height: Note! Because of the timing gate there is a 6¾ inch height
restriction!!!
Miscellaneous: No mechanical devices may be used to speed up the cars:
springs, magnets, moving weights, etc. Cars must run on the four wheels and two
axles provided in the kit. Axles must be stationary, but can be shortened.
Metal washers, cotter pins, etc, can be used to replace the red plastic
washers/caps provided in the kit. Any material is allowed in construction of
cars. Any lubrication, in any amount, is allowed before registration. No car
modifications or lubrication are allowed after registration, or between heats!
Other:
At registration, car weight and other dimensions will be verified.
If a brave cannot make it to the Y to register his car, another member of his
tribe, or a family member, can register it for him. The track will be set up
for trial runs Friday evening, and basic tools will be available for minor
adjustments on-site.
Each age bracket will be run as double-elimination, meaning that
each little brave is guaranteed at least two races. If possible, braves will not
race their first heat against other little braves in their own tribe.
Races will be started by the nose of the car. We will again be
using an electronic finishing gate to determine the winner of each heat. Track
problems of any kind will result in a ‘dead heat’ and the cars will be run
again.
No portion of the car may extend beyond the starting gate when the
car is placed on the track for racing.
