Hey!
Wow!
We are nearing another Spring Campout at Camp Y Noah just a little over a week
away. It seems like we were just enjoying the time at the Winter Campout not too
long ago. It has been a great Spring full of Indian Guides events with Sammy
& Jacob and I look forward to the fun slate of events we have to round out
the Summer. See Smoke for Nation Event schedule for the remainder of the year
and all pertinent details.
In
an effort to keep camping costs as low as we could for membership this year, we
opted to go “a la carte” style, meaning our fees (also reduced by $10 per person
due to everyone’s efforts at making our Annual Fundraiser a success) pay for the
basic Camping accoutrements we all love (Archery, BB Guns, Rock Climbing Wall,
Meals, Cabins and Canoeing – Saturday Only). I understand there will also be a
Fishing Derby, Nation Games and Chili on Friday night! It will definitely be a
full weekend of fun.
IF
YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN EXTRA EVENTS SUCH AS TRAIL
RIDES (BOYS 8 AND UP), ARENA RIDES (BOYS 7 AND UNDER) OR ALPINE
TOWER (BOYS 10 AND UP), YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU BRING EXTRA CASH
THAT WEEKEND TO PAY FOR THESE. This is a
Nation decision NOT a Camp Y Noah decision. Please keep this in mind while
we are enjoying our weekend at camp. Also, please see Smoke for cost breakdowns
for the campout.
You
likely have heard this from your Chief or will read this a few times as you go
through this Smoke but we want to make sure everyone is aware of the information
before you get to the campsite for the weekend and that there is no confusion.
If you have any questions about the above information, feel free to contact me
at any time. Sammy, Jacob and I look forward to seeing you all at the Campout!

I wanted
to use my report this month to request support for the upcoming Green Relay for
Life. I personally know three people
that are battling cancer right now and the outlook for all of them is not too
good. One of these happens to be my
girlfriend’s sister who is fighting brain cancer.
So
please consider helping!! Cancer touches
all of us in some way.
This
year we are changing things a bit. We’re
planning on selling wings! Imagine that!
We’ll also be selling water and popcorn.
For
those who have never attended the event I offer the following. Just going with your kids is fun, lots of
little games for them to play, plenty of food, music and dancing. Last year they had a couple high school rock
bands play and they were fun to watch!
They fill the place with luminaries with the names of cancer survivors
and those who have passed. I personally
purchase a couple every year for friends and family who have fought the
battle. You can walk the track to see
all the names and realize the magnitude of what this is.
And for
our booth, we need help. Setup, Selling
food, cooking food, running for supplies and tear down, to name a few
things.
So bring
a chair (maybe a blanket), work some in our booth, walk around the other
vendors, walk the track, hang out with your Nation members. Just come out and help this very worthy
cause!!
Contact me for more on how you can help or to just let us know you’re coming.

The new fire ring is now complete
at Camp Y Noah. Thanks for everyone's help in making this happen...it looks
great and will be a nice improvement to camp. We will dedicate it this
weekend at our fire ceremony. Also, look for another Trailblazers event later
this summer, either late July or August. At this point either a white water
rafting trip or a fishing charter on Lake Erie. Watch this space for more
details coming soon!

somehow seems appropriate for

Blogsite current and smokes have been posted to the
website. Getting excited about summer myself.
Website of the month is googlearth. Have you looked at the street level pictures they now have? Pull up a local map and zoom to the street level, then click on any of the camera icons at the street level and see a 360 picture from that specific location. Very interesting to go view old friends houses that live out-of-town, or finding directions. Very fascinating technology.

Why There are
Mosquitoes
An Iroquois
Legend
Many winters ago two giant mosquitoes appeared on either
side of a river. These giant creatures were as tall as a good sized pine tree.
As the Indian people paddled down the river in their canoes, these giant
creatures would bend their heads and attack them with their beaks. The
mosquitoes killed many people.
Knowing that these giant mosquitoes were
waiting to attack any canoe that floated down the river, the people began to
shun this particular stream. It was then that these giant creatures moved to
other streams to seek their prey.
For a while, it was a reign of terror
for the Iroquois who were great canoe travelers. They never knew just when these
giant mosquitoes would pounce out and devour them.
Finally, one day a war
party was organized to seek out these creatures and to destroy them. Twenty
warriors in two great canoes floated down a river where they expected the
mosquitoes to be. In their hands, ever ready, they held their bows and arrows.
Fastened to their belts were their war clubs and hunting
knives.
Suddenly, two shadows loomed over them and a giant beak pierced
one of the canoes. Giving their war cry, the warriors filled the air with many
arrows. The battle was terrific! The giant mosquitoes seemed to be everywhere at
the same time. In a little while, half the warriors had been killed.
The
remaining braves determined to die courageously. They hid behind trees and
bushes. They surrounded the mosquitoes that were unable to get them because of
the thick branches. The Iroquois buried many of their arrows in the bodies of
the two mosquitoes. Finally, after most of the arrows had been shot and the
supply had become low, the two mosquitoes fell to the earth. They were covered
with many wounds. Immediately, the warriors fell upon them with their war clubs
and, with powerful blows, they tore the bodies of the mosquitoes
apart.
From the blood of the two giant mosquitoes there sprang many
little mosquitoes and the air was soon filled with them. These little
mosquitoes, like their grandfathers, are fond of the taste of human blood. They
hate man for killing their grandfathers and are continually trying to get
revenge upon man for this reason.

Hey Mighty Apache! We hope to see everyone at the mighty Spring campout!
Remember that in order to reduce costs several events are pay as you go, so make
sure you have $ if you want to add those activities to your weekend.

and we are excited about meeting again on the shores of lake Y-Noah.

Blackhawk is looking
forward to the campout this weekend. I think we all need to get back to
nature, spend some quality time with our boys and slow the pace down even if it
is just for a couple days. The late-night at the Y was awesome and kudos to all
of you who organized it. My boys had a real blast...very tired after playing
basketball, swimming, jumping in the inflatable and playing dodge ball. It was
also nice to have short breaks watching movies and eating as much ice cream as
humanly possible. See you this weekend!

hey from the Cherokee Tribe. Spring has
finally sprung and we are expecting some great weather for this coming
weekend. We all had a GREAT time at the
Y Late Nighter. Dodge ball certainly
seemed to be the activity du jour. We
are now planning to meet with everyone at the Spring Campout at YNOAH. It promises to be a blast. Finally, HAPPY Birthday to Jarrett “Broken
Arrow” Wiggins on April 28th.
Comanche:
Tom “Fighting Eagle” Knoebel

The
Comanche had a good time at the late-night event, with representation right up
until about 1:30 am. This is one of the boys favorite events and the addition
of the inflatable was well received. Now if Tucker “Big Hawk” Pearce could just
avoid breaking any bones prior to the event, it would be even more
fun!
Our tribe
has slowly but surely regained our rightful place at the top of the Big Medicine
Standings. It took a while, but I think we are here to stay. Thanks to all
members for your great attendance. And speaking of members, the Comanche want
to welcome new members Tom and Zach Ebbott into the tribe. Glad you could join
us!
Happy April
birthdays to Collin “Black Stallion” Knisely who turned 8, and to Jeff “Last

We've all been outside enjoying the arrival of Spring. And
that can mean only one thing - Spring Campout is near! The tribe is very
excited and is looking forward to our first campout with the Nation. Should be
a great time to experience all those things we joined Indian Guides for.
See you all there.
