Nation Officer Reports

Nation Chief: John “Sits By Fire” Waller  330-867-5726,  330-256-4430 john.waller@wilsontool.com

Happy New Year to all Manikiki families! I hope all of your holidays were fun and the New Year is treating you well. A new twist on things in January is Individual Tribe Events rather than one Nation Event. Many Tribes have said they would like to get together as a tribe but always seem to run short on time. So here is our opportunity to get together on a smaller scale and enjoy time with our boys just the same. This event counts toward Big Medicine Points as all other Nation Events do.

The FASCAR/Winter Campout Event is also fast approaching on Saturday and Sunday, February 7th-8th. See this Smoke for details. This is our favorite event because it really drives home what our Guides program is all about: working together with your son to accomplish the task of making and racing a car. Someone recently told me the real event is the making of the car together with your son, not the race. I couldn’t agree more. I look forward to seeing each of the unique car designs our boys come up with.

I hope everyone reading this Smoke will participate in our Annual Reverse Raffle/Silent Auction by attending the event with your spouse or inviting some friends to join in as well. We are selling ad space in our program so all small business owners in the Nation; please think strongly about placing even a $25 business card ad. This will help us immensely. Also, our Silent Auction generates much of our revenue. I am asking that you donate a basket, gift certificates, even something at home you may not use any longer but would be a treasure for someone else. You would be surprised how much these items bid for. If you can’t make it that night consider buying two tickets anyway as a donation from your family or Tribe. Any and all of this will ensure our success this year! It’s all up to you.

Sorry for the length of this report but I know we can count on you to help our Nation remain financially fit so we can enjoy it for many years and pass it on when our time in the Guides is over.

War Chief: Jeff “Last Hawk” Pearce

330-645-6075, 330-714-7892 jeffp@pearceengineering.com

We had a great time at the Father Son Banquet.  I never expected  to win a Joe Friday Award so I want to say I’m honored and very grateful that I have been chosen for such a prestigious award.  It’s hanging on the wall of my office where it will stay for many years to come!!   Thank you to all the past winners that may have voted for me.  But I must add that I don't serve this nation for award from my peers, I serve this nation for the REWARD I get from son!!

I hope all the Comanche Tribe had fun at my house while working on our FASCars.  The race is getting close so the race is on to get the cars  done!

Hope everyone is getting their fundraiser tickets sold and getting donations for the reverse raffle.  This is a big event for us and we really need to make it a success!!

And my usual plea to all members to keep considering that leadership role in the Manikiki Nation!  The Nation needs you!

Sachem: Kurt “Big Bear” Leibensperger 330-699-4734, 330-606-1944 kurtwone@hotmail.com.

We have some great events planned for this winter...all free or minimal cost...including our bowling event at Akron Lanes, and  Y Overnighter at the Green Y, plus our fascar race/overnighter at Camp Y Noah next month.      Hope to see all of you there, as well as at our Fundraising event on March 7th.     Your support for this event is critical, since the money we raise at this event helps pay for all the other events we do this year.      We don't ask you or your kids to sell candy, magazine subscriptions.

All we ask is for you, and your significant other to come down to Guy's on March 7th, have a great time, eat, drink, bid on silent auction items and maybe even win some money in the reverse raffle or 50/50 drawing.   See your chief TODAY, and get your tickets, and join us for the party of the year!

I finally received the correct nation patches and if you would all give me a count of new members (2007-2008/09) that hasn’t received a nation patch contact me so I can bring them to the next Longhouse. I ordered more pink feathers and I owe Blackhawk, Kickapoo, and Navajo 1 pink feather each..I will bring them to the next Longhouse. If any tribes have bead/feather issues please contact me so I can have them available at the next Longhouse. I need a list of all participants for the service project from each tribe..Keep in mind that per our constitution little braves only get credit/recognition for perfect attendance by doing a service project. I hope all tribes have or are planning their January tribal events. I will need an attendance record of the event.

As always, we are looking forward to the FASCar event !  FAScar was one of  our  first  Indian Guides events, and we’ve been hooked ever since.

Chiefs, keep in contact with your tribe and make sure that everyone is getting the Smoke. We had a afew bad entries at the start but I think we’re up to speed on the mailing list, but don’t hesitate to make any corrections or suggestions.

This is a long edition of the Smoke, but I have included the FASCar information as well as all the forms for the Reverse Raffle.

The website is now being updated.  Sorry we had some security issues that prevented us from updating the website.  The upcoming events and the smoke get updated regulary.  As mentioned we also have a indianguides BLOG site going.  www.yindianguies.blogspot.com

If you are new to blogs – then here is your change to see on in operation.  In a blog you see the latest article first, so sometimes have to go back to earlier entries to read the entire story.  On the guide blog, start with the first entry.  I’ve been making regulary updates to the blog site, giving a lot more detail than can be done on the web page.

Right now we are figuring out what do to at the fall 2009 campout.  Go to the blog and cast your vote  We are voting on if we should go to another YMCA owned camp or to a private campground.  The web site of the month is www.yindianguides.blogspot.com

Apache: LARRY “Big Bear” Murgatroyd   330-882-2481, 330-475-696   jonmargear@sbcglobal.net

All had a good time at the Father-Son banquet.  Nice to see such a good turnout.  The Mighty Apache came in a very close second for 2008 Medicine Points.  We plan on reclaiming the top spot in 2009!  Our January tribal event has been planned for Castaway Bay in Sandusky on January 24, 2009.  Reservations can be made by calling Castaway Bay at 419-627-2106, reservation held under "M TRIBE".  Price is $119.00 per night, which includes 4 waterpark passes.  This is a family event, so bring the squaws!  We in the Mighty Apache would like to open this event to any other tribe that is interested.  For more info, e-mail me at larry@jonmargear.com.  Keep selling those reverse raffle tickets and get those sponsor items!

Arapaho: Paul “Big Foot” Scheatzle 330-832-0304, 330-323-7683 paulscheatzle@hotmail.com

The Arapaho tribe went to Laser Quest in Belden Village last week for our tribe event.  It was a lot of fun and really brought the tribe together.  They let us use the party room then for an hour which allowed us to have a short meeting and party.  We are looking forward to the fascar race and overnite campout.  It is  a great addition to a traditional event.

Blackhawk: DaveThunder Underground Bietko  330-807-9606  dave.beitko@snapon.com

A big thanks to all of those that organized the banquet.  It was a real success.  Last year the Arapaho cleaned up an unbelievable amount of leaves in an elderly mans yard for their service project.  In November, Blackhawk and Arapaho were planning on getting together to help the man out again, but he passed away.  We thought it fitting to help out the family by cleaning up again and mow and weed eat also.  It was a very rewarding service project for the tribes and the family was very appreciative (see attached card).

We will be tubing at Brandywine on January 25th and look forward to a great time in our individual tribe event.

Cherokee: RICK “Running Horse” CROWL

330-645-6435  rickcrowl@davisprintingco.com

Happy New Year from the Mighty Cherokee!  We like to report that we all had a great time at the Father Son Banquet last month and I would like to extend a sad farewell to Scott (Singing Moose) Summers and Kyle (Wild Moose) Summers,  the Williams clan (Dad) Frank (Chasing Tail) and Son’s Jake (Grey Wolf) and Joe (Hopping Monkey) as all are moving on.  Although I expect we’ll have “Moose” sightings for a while yet. Good luck to you guys we’ll miss having you around.  We are currently planning our January event and I know many of the Cherokee are bust readying for the FASCAR Race in February.  We look forward to the competition.  Lastly Happy Birthday to Will (Lightening Turtle) Smith as he turned 9 on December 13th.

Comanche: Tom “Fighting Eagle” Knoebel

330-882-2387 TKnoebel@tribute.com

The Comanche had a good time at the Father/Son Banquet in December where many awards were collected, including 6 perfect attendance awards for little braves and of course the Big Medicine Award for 2007-2008.  Also a special congratulations to Jeff “Last Hawk” Pearce on his winning the Joe Friday award – it is well deserved!

For our January Tribe event the Comanche prepared for the upcoming FASCar race by holding a workshop at Jeff’s house.  Some good ideas and tips were passed down from the veterans and we look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with on race day.  I predict a few trophies for speed and decoration will find homes with Comanche little braves!

Speaking of FASCar, the race is Feb 7th, preregistration is Feb 6th - so there is still plenty of time to build your car!  If you need a kit please call me at 330.819.4164 and arrange to get one.  They are $5 each.  You don’t want to miss this event!  Yes, it is typically one of the boys favorites, but more importantly, it is the time you spend with your son(s) working on the cars that carries the most value.

Happy Birthday to: Kenton and Garrison Keeslar, and Kevin “Princess Running Pike” Adkins.

The Creek are traveling to the shores of Lake Eire to see the Erie Monsters take on the Hamilton Bulldogs.  It should be lots of fun.  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Tonka Hey!  Navajo enjoyed doing an individual tribe event.  We went snow tubing at Polar Blast the weekend of the big snow.  If you've never been there - it's worth a visit!  Navajo will be working on our service project in Feb & Mar - we're sending needed supplies to a local army group on active duty.  If anyone is interested in donating anything the soldiers may want, please contact any Navajo member.  Our tribe is looking forward to the FASCar and reverse raffle.

Seneca: Daniel "Chief Broken Bone”  Charlick  330-834-9334, 330-416-8478 danielcharlick@att.net

Tonka Hey Manikiki Nation. The Seneca tribe had a great event this month. We built our FASCARS (or at least got started on them) and enjoyed some Winter fun with sledding! Best of all - no major injuries! (Chief Broken Bone likes to see that). We look forward to the upcoming events, spending time with our tribe and Nation, and continuing to build special memories as the year goes on. See you soon.

I would like to thank the Manikiki Nation to the flowers and all the individuals in our organization that sent condolences or dropped by at the calling hours for my brother’s memorial service.  Here is a quote from the eulogy that we all need to live by'   "Life is short and there are no guarantees for tomorrow, so we better make the most of all our todays ".  Please take a moment right now to show and tell your family how much they mean to you.

An Achomawi Legend

Snow had fallen every day for months. All the animals were cold, hungry, and frightened. Food supplies were almost gone. No one knew what to do. Blue jay and Redheaded Woodpecker sang and danced for Silver Gray Fox, who floats above the clouds. Since Silver Gray Fox, the creator, had made the whole world with a song and a dance, Blue jay and Woodpecker hoped to be answered with blue skies. But the snow kept falling.

The animals decided to ask Coyote. "Coyote's been around a long time, almost since the beginning. He might know how to reach Silver Gray Fox even though it was Coyote's mischief-making when the world was new that had caused Silver Gray Fox to go away beyond the clouds in the first place.

Coyote, however, needed the help of the very wise Spider Woman. O clever one," called Coyote in his sweetest voice, "we're all cold and hungry. Everyone's afraid this winter will never end. Silver Gray Fox doesn't seem to notice. Can you help?" Spider Woman’s eight black eyes sparkled when she spoke, "I know how to reach Silver Gray Fox, Coyote, but I'm not the one for the work. Everyone will have to help. Spider Woman told them her plan, and her two young twin Spider Boys set off with Coyote in the snow.

Coyote gathered many of his animal friends on his way to the top of Mount Shasta. The Meadowlark, the Weasel, the Red Fox and the Mouse all joined him. The snow had stopped, but the sky was still cloudy. On top of Mount Shasta, Coyote barked, "Will our two best archers step forward?" The two White Footed Mouse Brothers proudly lifted their bows.

"Everyone listen," barked Coyote. “To get through the clouds to Silver Gray Fox, we must each share our powers whole-heartedly, our thoughts, our dreams, our strength, and our songs. Now, you White-Footed Mouse Brothers, I want you to shoot arrows at exactly the same spot in the sky."

Turning to the others, Coyote said, "Spider Boys, start spinning spider silk as fast as you can. Weasel Man, White- Footed Mouse Brothers, Red Fox Woman, Rabbit Woman, and I will sing and make music. We must sing with all our might or the Spider Boys won't make it."

The Mouse Brothers pulled back their bowstrings. Two arrows shot straight up and stuck at the same spot in the clouds.

The Spider Boys hurled out long lines of spider silk, weaving swiftly with all their legs. The animals sang up a whirlwind of sound to lift the spider silk until it caught on the arrows in the clouds. Then the Spider Twins scurried up the lines of silk and scrambled through the opening.

All the while, down below, the animals continued singing, rattling and drumming. The little Spiders sank, breathless, onto the clouds. Silver Gray Fox spied them and called out, "What are you two doing here?" The Spider Boys bent low on their little legs and answered, "O Silver Gray Fox, we bring greetings from our mother, Spider Woman, and all the creatures of the world below. We've come to ask if you'd please let the sun shine again. The whole world is cold. Everyone is hungry. Everyone is afraid spring will not return, ever."

They were so sincere and polite that Silver Gray Fox became gentler, and asked, "How did you two get up here?" The Spider Boys said, "Listen, can you hear the people singing? Can you hear the drum and rattle?" Silver Gray Fox heard the drum and rattle and the people singing and was pleased. "I'm happy when creatures use their powers together. I'm especially glad to hear Coyote's been helping too. To reward all your hard work, I'll create a sign to show that the skies will clear. And you two may help.”

"First, picture the sun shining bright," called Silver Gray Fox. The Spider Boys thought hard and saw the sun sending out fiery rays in all directions. "Now, where sun-rays meet the damp air," sang Silver Gray Fox, Picture a stripe of red, Red as Woodpecker's head, Add a stripe nearby of bluest Blue Jay blue. The Spider Boys thought hard, and great stripes appeared of red and blue. Silver Gray Fox chanted, Now in between, Add stripes of orange, yellow and green! The Spider Boys thought hard. Then, dazzling their eyes, a beautiful bright arc of colors curved across the whole sky above the clouds. It was the very first rainbow.

Then the Spider Boys spun down to Earth, and ran back to their mother as fast as they could. Spider Woman cried for joy and wrapped all her legs around her two littlest children.  All the animals gathered around to hear the Spiders story. When they finished, the Spider Boys cried, "Look up!" Everyone looked up. The clouds had drifted apart. There, bridging sky to earth in a radiant arch, was the very first rainbow.

Sun began to warm the earth. Shoots of grass pushed up through the melting snow. Meadowlark blew her silver whistle of spring across the valley, calling streams and rivers awake. Coyote came out of hiding, raced to a distant hilltop, and gave a long, long howl of joy. The animals held a great feast to honor the rainbow, Silver Gray Fox, Spider Woman, the Spider Twins, Coyote, and the hard work everyone had done together.

To this day, after the rain, when the sun comes out, dewdrops on spider webs shine with tiny rainbows. This is the spiders' special reward. You can see for yourself.
