Tonka
Hey!
Wow,
what a great couple of events we’ve had with the Indian Guides over the last few
weekends. Our Apache tribe event at Castaway Bay was too much, and the
FASCAR/Winter Campout last weekend was a blast! Kudos to the Comanche and
Arapaho for pulling off another successful FASCAR race and Congrats to our boys
for some very fast & creative cars again this year. If you weren’t at the
Winter Campout, you missed a great time. There were great fires, sled riding,
snowboarding, tubing, snowballs, euchre, football, great food, just all kinds of
fun. I hope it gets even bigger next time around.
We
are now only a few days away from our Annual Reverse Raffle/Silent Auction. Not
only is it a very important night for the Manikiki
Nation but it is one fun time. Come out and enjoy hors d’ oeuvres, open bar,
dancing, entertainment, a tasty meal, bingo, 50/50 Raffle, 11th
Ticket Raffle, side boards, a chance to win big money and pick up some great
silent auction items. Spend Saturday night, March 7th @ Guy’s Party
Centre from 6PM-Midnight with your tribemates having a
lot of fun and helping ensure the strength of the Nation at the same time.
Thanks to all of you in advance for your support of this wonderful
organization!

FASCar Race
was a blast. There were some great cars
and fortunately there wasn’t any controversy this year; just wish more dads
would participate with their boys. A
thank you goes out to Paul Scheatzle for provided the
food and beverages, those were some good doughnuts! Just glad he could handle that on top of all
the time he spent racing his car!
I also
want to thank my fellow Comanche for all their help! It was great to see the
tribal effort that went into this event. And an added thank you to Tom Knoebel's dad for all he does to help with the
track!
I’m
looking forward to the Fundraiser. I
don’t know about everyone else but I sure have a good time. Please do what you can to get items for the
silent auction, and let everyone you know that’s coming to bring plenty of cash
for bingo, sideboards, cards and 50/50!
As the
Nation Chief next year I’m busy trying to fill council positions. This is a warning that I’ll be campaigning
pretty hard at the Fundraiser for people to step up and take a leadership
role. I have a few positions filed
already (Medicine Man, and hopefully
Wampum
Bearer, Tom and Jim!) but there are still a couple openings (War Chief, Tally
Keeper, Story Teller, Web Spinner). If
you’re interested please see me. This
means you Charles!!!
See you all at the bowling!

The
fundraiser is quickly approaching and hopefully we will sell all our tickets and
have many great silent auction items. If you haven’t turned in your money or
ticket stubs please do this soon. The earlier we get names for tickets it will
make seating and setup smoother on the night of the event. Be kind to Jim Livers
and try to have one check per tribe made out to the Manikiki Nation.
If any
Tribe Chief’s still has an overdue Service Project count or the January
individual tribal event please contact me.

Michael and
I had a great time at the Fascar and camp out. Thanks
to the Comanche for doing a great job as always and thanks to Dano for the great food. The camp out seemed to be a hit.
All the tribes who didn’t make it missed out on a great
time.
The
fundraiser is fast approaching and silent auction items and ads are trickling
in. I think we will be gaining momentum the closer we come to the fundraiser.
Thanks to all the tribes who have contributed and will contribute.

goes out to the Comanche for running another great FASCar event! As the
fundraiser is quickly approaching don’t forget to sell Ads and find silent
auction items. Remember this is our only fundraiser and goes to reducing the
cost or making some events absolutely FREE!

The web
site and blogsite are current. Now that Obama is
president he seems to have solved the technical problems (left over I am sure
from the Bush administration) we were having with the website. As mentioned
before we are using the blog for members to post current video and pictures.
The website will be more static information designed for non-members, as well as
monthly smokes and our schedule.
If anybody has pictures to share with the tribe please use Google’s free Picasa photo tools. Just go to Google and type in ‘Picasa”, download Picasa 3 and run it. There is some really simple photo editing tools, as well as you can upload photos to a ‘web album’ with just one click. It is much much easier than emailing me photos!!!. After you upload the photos just send me the link in an email and I can add that link to our blog site. Just be sure to make the album ‘public’ and not private. Also it makes it more fun it you put in some simple comments with each photo. Each account gets 1gig of storage, and then you can buy more if needed (but 1 gig is over 1000 web pictures).
The cool web site of the month is http://picasa.google.com/. Did I mention that this service is Free? Actually for most simple photo editing (like fixing red-eye, cropping and adjusting brightness) I now use Picasa as it is just so much easier to use than Photoshop.
Story
Teller: Sam “Buffalo
Hump” Ewing 330-245-1138,
517-907-9860 samewing@sbcglobal.net
An old man was sitting in
his lodge, by the side of a frozen stream. It was the end of Winter, the air was
not so cold, and his fire was nearly out. He was old and alone. His locks were
white with age, and he trembled in every joint. Day after day passed, and he
heard nothing but the sound of the storm sweeping before it the new-fallen
snow.
One day while his fire was
dying, a handsome young man entered the lodge. His cheeks were red, his eyes
sparkled. He walked with a quick, light step. His forehead was bound with
sweet-grass, and he carried a bunch of fragrant flowers in his
hand.
"Ah, my Son," said the old
man, "I am happy to see you. Come in. Tell me your adventures, and what strange
lands you have seen. I will tell you my wonderful deeds, and what I can perform.
You shall do the same, and we will amuse each other."
"I am Peboan, the Spirit of Winter," said the old man. "I blow my
breath, and the streams stand still. The water becomes stiff and hard as clear
stone."
"I am Seegwun, the Spirit of Spring," answered the youth. "I
breathe, and flowers spring up in the meadows and woods."
"I shake my locks," said the
old man, "and the snow covers the land. The leaves fall from the trees, and my
breath blows them away. The birds fly to the distant land, and the animals hide
themselves from the cold."
"I shake my ringlets," said
the young man, "and the warm showers of soft rain fall upon the Earth. The
flowers lift their heads from the ground, and the grass grows thick and green.
My voice recalls the birds, and they come flying joyfully from the South-land.
The warmth of my breath unbinds the streams, and they sing the songs of Summer.
Music fills the groves wherever I walk, and all Nature
rejoices."
And while they were thus
talking, a wonderful change took place. The Sun began to rise. A gentle warmth
stole over the place. Peboan, the Spirit of Winter,
became silent. His head drooped, and the snow outside the lodge melted away.
Seegwun, the Spirit of Spring, grew more radiant, and
rose joyfully to his feet. The Robin and the Bluebird began to sing on the top
of the lodge. The stream murmured past the door, and the fragrance of opening
flowers came softly on the breeze.
The lodge faded away, and
Peboan sank down and dissolved into tiny streams of
water, that vanished under the brown leaves of the forest.
Thus the Spirit of Winter
departed, and where he melted away the Indian children gathered the first
blossoms, fragrant and delicately pink, - the modest Spring
Beauty.

TONKA HEY! Just a reminder, the Reverse Raffle is quickly approaching! If you need additional tickets, please let me know. I do need a check for the tickets you currently have that you have sold. You can mail the checks to me at 1963 West Comet Road, Clinton, OH 44216. Please keep in mind that the Reverse Raffle offsets costs of upcoming events, in some cases making the events free of charge. We also need Silent Auction items, so anything you can come up with would be greatly appreciated. Please keep me posted of your progress, and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Arapaho:
Paul “Big Foot” Scheatzle 330-832-0304, 330-323-7683 paulscheatzle@hotmail.com
Congrautulations to Logan, Breslin, PJ and Barrett Scheatzle
of the Arapaho tribe for their great showing at the fascar race. Great job Tom Noebel
and all of the Comancje tribe for another successful
event. The winter campout was a lot of fun and the weather cooporated. It's definately a
keeper.
Blackhawk:
Dave“Thunder
Underground” Bietko 330-807-9606 dave.beitko@snapon.com
After attending my first FASCAR with
my boys, I have to say "Y'all are NUTS!!!!". As my boys and I scoured our house
for scrap metal and found ingenious ways to adhere them or impale them to the
boys cars, you were all out there using store bought weights and crafting
beautiful vehicles that I could never imagine having the time or the skill to
make. That being said, it was fun and the boys WANT to do it next year...will
need to get with some folks that know what they are doing. The campout was
great and I hope we do it again next year. Boy those Crow really know how to
eat!! Thanks to all for being so welcoming at the campout. You have
proved once again the greatness of the Manikiki
Nation. We are looking forward to bowling in March and hope we have a great
turnout.
Cherokee:
RICK “Running Horse” CROWL
330-645-6435 rickcrowl@davisprintingco.com
The
mighty Cherokee wish to thank the Comanche tribe for putting on another fine
FASCAR event. Once again a great time was had by all. The Cherokee tribe also
had a successful race day as 5 trophies were won by our little braves
including Blaine Rossiter,1st
Place Speed for the 8 & 9 yr olds, Justin Crowl,
2nd Place Speed and 1st Place Design for 8 & 9 yr
olds, Will Smith 2nd Place Design for 8 & 9 yr olds and Jake
Ewing 1st Place Design for the 10 & 11 yr olds. Congratulations
to all. As of this writing we are
preparing for our tribe event on February 20th, a trip to LaserQuest in Canton which should be a fun evening for both
big and small braves. Finally, a Happy
Birthday coming up on February 22nd to Spencer “Running Bull” Goodin.
Comanche:
Tom “Fighting Eagle” Knoebel
330-882-2387 TKnoebel@tribute.com
The Comanche want to thank everyone for participating in
this year’s FASCar race! Actually, we want to thank 47.9% of you, since
that is the percentage of the little braves who raced this year (68 of 142).
This continues a 5-year slide in attendance for this event, from a high of 73.1%
in 2004 to present.
In my opinion FASCar
is one of the best events we do, and I know it’s a favorite of many of the
boys. It epitomizes what it means to be in Indian Guides; that is, fathers and
sons working together to build a car. It also is the only competitive event in
our Nation year; the only place a boy can win a trophy.
But the numbers
indicate maybe the event has run it’s course and it is time for something
fresh. Please let your Chief know how you feel about the event one way or the
other so Council can decide whether to keep the event next year or look for
something new.
And special thanks from
Jeff and I go out to the other Comanche dads who stepped up and really helped
make this event run smooth. You guys gave up half your weekend, and we really
appreciate all you do. Happy February birthdays to Nathan “Fishing Cat”
McKenney, Logan “Slithering Snake” Knoebel, and Jim “Flying Eagle”
Schlosser!

“Tonka Hey! The
Creek Tribe had a great time at the Lake Erie Monsters hockey game. It was a
very exciting match as the Monsters took down one of the league’s best teams,
the Bulldogs of Hamilton Ontario, 3-1. The Monsters placed us in great seats
with half price food and excellent distractions! All had fun and the view was
second to none.
As our annual
service project The Creek built birdhouses for the Portage Lakes State Park.
The event was covered by the South Side Leader and featured photos of a few of
our tribe members working away. It was a good service project that allowed us to
work as a team and spend quality time with our sons. Hopefully the spot in the
Leader will spark additional interest in guides.
Big Happy Birthday
wishes go out to Brett “Wild Mandu” Simmons and Xander “Night Owl”
Borne.
The late night
LaserQuest event for dads is coming up on Friday, February 27th. I need money
and signed waivers from anyone planning to attend.”

Greetings Crow
Tribe. I would like to thank you all for a fantastic time at the winter
campout, although it was short it was definitely an event our boys will remember
for many years to come! Thanks a bunch to Tony Hawk for stepping up and taking
care of the tickets for the fundraiser. We still have tickets available, but
Tony has handed them all over to me, so anyone who sells any more tickets can
just email me. Debbie and I are looking forward to another fun evening with all

Greeting from the
Mighty Seneca Tribe!
The
young Seneca tribe is currently sitting at #2 on the Big Medicine leader board
and with nearly full tribe participation in the FASCAR we should hold our
position! It was an educational race weekend for us, not only in the tricks of
FASCAR ultra-tuning (although Noah Charlick did barely miss Showing in the 7
year-old age bracket with a car weighing in at 12.3 oz!) but also and more
importantly in the art of campout cooking! Those who were brave enough to stay
at Y-Noah for the Winter Campout were rewarded with a fun and memorable day.
Thanks to all who made those events possible. See you all next month at bowling
and the fundraiser!
