1973 - 1974
Joe Koehler was elected Wy-ENA Longhouse/Federation Chief and Gene
Sliger was elected Wampum Bearer. Even though the Tonkawa (Northern)
Nation and Manikiki (Southern) Nation were separate, they reported back
to the Firestone Park YMCA though the Wy-ENA Longhouse.
The Spring Campout rates were 3-meals/1 night for $15.00 or
5 meals/2 nights for $20.00. You could get “Deluxe” meals at Tippecanoe
for an extra cost. Phil Joseph of the Blackhawk tribe caught the
biggest fish at the Spring Campout – a 3 lb. Carp.
Because of declining contents in the dollar box of candy and declining
sales, the Nation decided to change the fundraiser from the fall candy
sale to paper drives throughout the year. The price of scrap paper
dropped and the paper drive scheduled for May was postponed until
August. The price of paper remained low but the Nation Council decided
to have the drive in August and get what money they could.
The Tuscarawas Tribe built a float for Canal Days.
The August Event was planned to be a tour of the GM Lordstown Plant but
because of a strike the event was canceled.
Fifty-five fathers signed up at the Organization Drive; three new
tribes were formed.
The Nation also considered a candy sale due to the less than successful
paper drive. It was finally decided the Nation would sell Christmas
Trees. Trees were purchased locally. The Christmas tree sale was cold
and not very successful.
Blackhawk Tribe won the Big Medicine Award for 1974.
The Father/Son Banquet was held at the Barberton Slovene Center.
